Warriors Fall in Four on Friday Night

Freshman Hannah Moore finished with a game-high 13 kills.

DETROIT -- With hopes that returning home would help the Wayne State University volleyball team (4-8, 2-6 GLIAC) find its stride, the Warriors hosted Hillsdale (7-5, 6-2 GLIAC) on Friday night inside the Matthaei, The Chargers took the match 3-1. WSU dropped the first set 25-14 before tying the match with a 25-16 set-two victory. Hillsdale responded by taking sets three and four by scores of 25-22 and 27-25, respectively.

A Chargers kill from Jordan Denmark gave the visitors a 10-6 lead early in the opening set. WSU pulled within one at 10-9 after a HC ball handling error. However, that would be as close as the set would be the rest of the way. Hillsdale ended the game on a 15-5 run to win the set 25-14.

The Warriors responded well in the second set leading 11-5 and forcing a HC timeout. After back-to-back Hillsdale attack errors the Warriors extended their lead to 16-8. Two more attack errors from the Chargers gave WSU a 19-9 advantage. Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) ended the set with a kill to give the Green & Gold a 25-16 victory and tie the match at one win apiece.

Two kills from Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) early in the third set put WSU on top 9-6. The Chargers would go on an 8-2 run to take a 14-11 lead and force a Warrior timeout. The beat went on for Hillsdale following the timeout and led 19-14. A kill from Moore and back-to-back-to-back kills from Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) tied the game at 21-21. However, HC ended the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-22 and take a 2-1 match lead.

Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) connected for a kill to give WSU a 6-3 lead to begin the fourth set. The Warriors continued to lead 15-9 before the Chargers began their comeback. A HC ball handling error kept WSU ahead 21-18. The Warriors continued to struggle to close out a set as Hillsdale ended the set on a 9-4 run to win 27-25 and the match 3-1.

Moore finished with a game-high 13 kills while Norscia posted 12 kills. Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) tallied 33 assists while Madison Kielty (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) helped the defense with 13 digs. Bonewits was solid at the net with seven total blocks.

The Warriors will remain at home to host Findlay on Saturday at 4 PM.
