TIFFIN, Ohio – The Wayne State University men's basketball squad (2-10 overall, 2-7 GLIAC) suffered a 65-59 overtime setback at Tiffin University (6-10 overall, 2-7 GLIAC) Thursday evening. The contest began a stretch of 14 consecutive games against the GLIAC South Division. WSU concluded its slate against GLIAC North Division teams last Saturday.
The Warriors grabbed a 30-24 lead at halftime after limiting the Dragons to 31 percent (8-of-26) from the floor in the first half. WSU's largest lead was eight (28-20) following a lay-up by redshirt sophomore forward
Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron).
Junior guard
Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) knocked down two triples in the first 20 minutes and was tied for the team scoring lead with six points along with freshman guard
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly).
TU's Ashton Khan had eight points including 6-of-6 from the foul line, as the Dragons were 8-of-8 compared to Wayne State's zero attempts before intermission.
A dunk by
Joel Ndondo (Ajax, Ont.) on the opening possession of the second half pushed the Warrior lead back to eight. A 9-0 run by the Dragons put the hosts ahead 33-32.
Four lead changes in 64 seconds resulted in a Tiffin lead following a jumper by Khan.
A 6-0 run by Wayne State, keyed by Lewis who had five points during the spurt, gave the Warriors a 42-40 lead at the 9:42 mark.
Lewis' triple would be WSU's last made field goal until just before the end of regulation when Toma connected from long range to knot the game at 54.
Wayne State shot 30 percent (6-of-20) in the second half compared to 48 percent (11-of-23) for the Dragons.
The Warriors had two turnovers and two missed field goal attempts to start overtime but took a 57-56 lead on a triple by
Daniel Ball (Dearborn Heights, Mich. / Allen Park Cabrini), which followed a lay-up by Tiffin's Khaleal McCormick.
After two more misfires from the floor for WSU, Ball sank a pair from the charity stripe to pull the Warriors within two at 61-59 with 1:50 left.
Zack Riddle made two free throws in a double bonus situation to restore the four-point advantage for the Dragons.
Wayne State missed its final three field goal attempts in the extra session to finish just 1-of-8 from the floor in overtime. Meanwhile, Tiffin was 3-of-7 on field goals in the extra stanza.
Toma led WSU with 11 points, while Ball contributed 10 points. Lewis nearly had a double-double with a game-high 12 rebounds and nine points. Toma, Moore and sophomore guard
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) each had four assists.
McCormick totaled a game-high 22 points, with Khan adding 21 points and a game-best nine assists.
The Warriors return home and will host Ohio Dominican on Saturday at 3 p.m.
