Men's Basketball Downs Walsh 77-60

Warriors snap nine-game losing streak.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (3-14 overall, 3-11 GLIAC) ended its nine-game losing streak in a big way with a 77-60 triumph over visiting Walsh University (10-8 overall, 6-8 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon at the Matthaei.  WSU had lost six games by an average of five points during the losing skein.

The Warriors struck first on an offensive rebound and put back by sophomore center Joel Ndondo (Ajax, Ont.) before the Cavaliers knotted the game on a jumper by LJ Campbell.  The 2-2 deadlock would be the only tie of the contest as Wayne State tallied five straight points on a conventional three-point play by sophomore forward Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) followed by a lay-up by freshman forward Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech).

After Walsh pulled within one (10-9), the Warriors went on an 8-1 run over the next 2:30 as four different WSU players scored buckets.  The Cavaliers were within five (22-17) after Jesse Hardin Jr. made all three free throw attempts after being fouled on a triple try.

Wayne State's lead was between five and nine until the Warrior defense shut down the Walsh offense for the final 2:25 of the first half and the hosts scored six consecutive points for a 39-27 advantage at intermission.

WSU shot 57 percent (16-of-28) from the field in the opening 20 minutes, compared to 35 percent (10-of-29) for Walsh.  Each team made two triples and five foul shots in the first half.

The Warriors kept their margin in double digits until a triple by Hardin Jr. at the 13:54 mark made it an eight-point game (49-41).  Following a lay-up by Key, Walsh's Zac Carter drained one of his team-best three three-pointers to reduce the WSU lead to seven (51-44).  Wayne State responded with six straight points on baskets by sophomore guard Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance), Key and senior forward Daniel Ball (Dearborn Hts., Mich. / Allen Park Cabrini).

WSU's lead grew to 16 (68-52) as freshman guard Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) made a pair from the charity stripe.  Seven straight points by the Warriors preceded two late triples in the final minute by the Cavaliers to complete the scoring.

Lewis led WSU with a game-high 18 points, while Key scored a career-high 16 to pace four Warriors in double figures.  Toma contributed 13 points, while Moore chipped in with 10 points and a game-best five assists as Wayne State was 16-of-28 from the field in each half.

A trio of Cavaliers - Trey Fletcher, Carter and Hardin Jr. - each scored 15 points in the contest with Hardin Jr. totaling a game-high nine rebounds.

Wayne State remains at home for its next two contests -- Monday at 7:30 p.m. against Findlay, and Thursday and 7:30 p.m. vs. Tiffin.
