DETROIT -- Beginning a stretch of six of seven games at home, the Wayne State University women's basketball team (16-2, 12-2 GLIAC) hosted Walsh (14-6, 8-6 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon inside the Matthaei. The Warriors were powered by six players scoring double-digits and 12 total Warriors scoring in the 97-87 victory. WSU has won 12 of its last 13 contests.
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) put WSU on top, 9-8, at the 15-minute mark.
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) connected from behind the arc to keep the Warriors up one, 14-13, with 14 minutes left before the break. Steetman's triple began a 10-0 run to put the Green & Gold ahead 21-13 with just under 12 minutes to play in the half.
The Cavaliers trimmed the deficit to four after two free throws with 11 minutes remaining.
Christina Green (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup) came off the bench and made an immediate impact. She gave WSU a double-digit lead with a layup at the eight-minute mark. The home lead ballooned to 18 after two free throws from
Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern) with 35 seconds left in the stanza.
WSU led 51-36 at the break as Green and
Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) led the Warriors with 10 points each.
Walsh scored the first four points of the second half but the Warriors responded with a 9-0 run to take a commanding 60-40 lead at the 17:27 mark.
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) knocked down a three-pointer to give WSU a 67-45 lead at the 13-minute mark.
McKenzie Kudron (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) also connected from deep to keep WSU ahead by 20 points, 78-58, with 7:13 left in the game.
Audrey Badovick and Jalynn Graham hit back-to-back triples to bring the Cavs within 12, 78-66, at the 6:30 mark. Brown slowed the Walsh run with an old fashioned three-point play to put WSU ahead 83-66 with just under five minutes left.
Walsh fought hard down the stretch but it would prove to be too little too late as WSU collected the 97-87 victory.
In just 21 minutes, Brown led WSU with 17 points. Long and Green each scored 12 points off the bench, while Streetman chipped in 11.
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and
Destiny Lavita-Stephens each scored 10 points. Machado posted a career-high eight assists as WSU dished out a season-high 32 assists as a team. Machado also tallied nine rebounds, four steals and four blocks to go with her six points.Â
The Warriors shot 53.5 percent (38-of-71) from the floor for the game.
Walsh's Brooklyn Wooten led all scorers with 24 points.
