MIDLAND, Mich. – The Wayne State University women's tennis team defeated Tiffin, 5-2, for a third-place finish in the 2015 GLIAC Tournament on Sunday morning at the Midland Community Tennis Center. The Green and Gold posted a 2-1 record in the tournament, and tallied 12 singles and doubles combined match wins over the three days.
DOUBLES- Junior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and senior
Alex Poissant (Laval, Que. / Vanier Prep) topped Valentina Mazzola and Biance Avram, 8-1, at the second flight.
- Sophomore
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil / Unificado) and junior
Ashley Walker (Canton, Mich. / Salem) bested Caroline Harpaintner and Adel Musina, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles.
- Freshman duo
Liv Peisachovitz (Vaughan, Ont. / Northview Heights S.S.) and
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia / Moscow School 45) fell in a close, 8-6, game to Caroline Nelhage and Aimee Kaye at the first doubles position.
SINGLES- Poissant beat Mazzola in three sets, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, at the second singles flight, while senior
Julia Kamenko (Toronto, Ont. / Vaughan S.S.) recorded a two-set win, 6-4, 6-4, over Harpaintner at No. 4 singles.
- Ghellere topped Avram, 6-4, 6-1, at the fifth position, and freshman
Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont. / St. Anne's S.S.) fell to Kaye, 6-1, 6-0, at the sixth flight.
UP NEXT- The Warriors concluded the fall season with an 11-4 overall record and 8-3 in the GLIAC. Wayne State will start its spring season in early March with a match against Northwestern Ohio.
