DETROIT -- In the final game of the GMAC/GLIAC Challenge, the Wayne State University men's basketball team (0-2) fell, 82-75, to Alderson Broaddus (1-1) on Sunday evening inside the Matthaei. The Warriors trimmed ABU's lead to six on two occasions including once in the second half but the comeback attempt would run out of time. The GLIAC went 1-3 against the GMAC in the two-day event.
HOW IT HAPPENED- A
Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) lay-up put WSU ahead 10-9 five minutes into the contest. The Battlers regained control with a 9-2 run to take an 18-12 lead. With just under five minutes to play in the first stanza, an ABU bucket extended the visitors lead to 10, 26-16. Following a
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) lay-up and two free throws from
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) the Warriors trimmed the deficit to six with three minutes left before intermission.
Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) connected from deep right before the buzzer to send the teams into the locker rooms with ABU leading 34-27.
- The Battlers opened the second half on a 7-2 run capped by a triple from Detroit native Dorrell Foster to stake ABU to a 41-29 lead. A lay-up from
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) brought the Warriors within six again at 44-38 with 13 minutes left. Another ABU three-pointer returned the deficit back to 12, 56-44, with 8:31 to play. ABU took its largest lead of the game at the seven-minute mark, 60-46. A two-pointer from Bishop made it 68-61 with 4:43 on the clock and the deficit stayed at seven following a Lewis basket. Once again, ABU had an answer and extended its lead to 11 at the two minute mark.
Joel Ndondo (Ajax, Ont. / Christian Faith Center Academy) made two free throws to return the gap to single digits at 75-67. The two teams traded free throws down the stretch and the Battlers were able to hold on for a seven-point victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS- Lewis tallied a career-high 24 points while pulling down eight rebounds. Bishop added 17 points of his own .
- Moore collected three steals.
TEAM NOTES- Both teams shot 45 percent from the floor but ABU held the advantage from behind the arc shotting 50 percent (11-for-22).
- The Battlers controlled the glass to a tune of 44 to 28 including 16 offensive rebounds, which led to 21 second-chance points.
UP NEXT- WSU will hit the road for three straight games beginning with the final non-conference tilt of the season at Lewis on Nov. 28th. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
