NOTRE DAME, Ind. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad began its exhibition slate with a 101-52 setback at the University of Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon.
The Fighting Irish scored the first five points as the Warriors were unable score early due to four missed shots and four turnovers. Junior forward
Christina Green (Southfield, Mich. / lathrup) broke the ice at the 6:35 mark. Sophomore guard
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) and senior guard
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) added triples later in the first quarter.
Streetman contributed four three-pointers in the second period as the WSU offense heated up by scoring 17 points. The Warriors trailed 46-25 at intermission.
The third period saw Streetman drained two more shots from beyond the arc, but WSU was out-scored 28-14 in the stanza.
Freshman guard
India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) tallied a team-best five points in the fourth quarter with Green adding a pair of buckets.
Streetman was the lone Warrior in double figures with 21 points, while Hawkins contributed seven points. Sophomore guard
Nina Foster (Lansing, Mich. / Everett) tallied a team-best four assists with both Streetman and Wilson adding three steals each.
Wayne State shot 33 percent (18-of-54) from the floor, but the Warriors shot 44 percent (11-of-25) from three-point range. WSU did record 12 steals as the Warrior defense forced UND into 18 turnovers.
Marina Mabrey led the Fighting Irish with 22 points off the bench on 7-of-9 from the floor (1-of-2 three pointers) along with 7-of-8 from the charity stripe. Madison Cable nearly had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high nine rebounds. Lindsay Allen chipped in a game-best 11 assists for Notre Dame.
Wayne State will play its second exhibition game at Eastern Michigan on Tuesday before beginning regular-season play at the GLIAC/GMAC Challenge in Painesville, Ohio on Nov. 14-15.
