FINDLAY, Ohio -- The 17th ranked Wayne State University women's basketball team (22-4 overall, 18-4 GLIAC) claimed the GLIAC South Division title with a 70-52 triumph at the University of Findlay (15-11 overall, 11-11 GLIAC) Thursday evening. The victory assures the Warriors of the No. 2 seed for next Wednesday's GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal game at the Matthaei against the seventh-seeded Walsh Cavaliers.
WSU scored the game's first points on a basket by senior center
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc), and after a Findlay free throw, the Warriors rattled off 16 consecutive points before another Oiler foul shot made it 17-2 with 15:24 left. All five Wayne State starters had at least two points during the run.
UF went on an 8-0 spurt to pull within seven (17-10) on a bucket by Emily Molnar at the 12:43 mark, but the Warriors responded with a 9-2 run to open a 14-point advantage at 26-12.
After Findlay cut the WSU lead to 11 (33-22), Wayne State ended the first half on a 9-4 run.
The Warriors led 42-26 at intermission after shooting 42 percent (16-of-38) from the floor in the first half compared to 33 percent (8-of-24) for the Oilers. UF did have a 14-8 advantage in free throw attempts during the opening 20 minutes despite WSU having a 24-8 edge in points in the paint. Brown totaled 16 points and eight rebounds by halftime.
Findlay started the second half on a 7-2 run to pull within 11 at 44-33 with 17:34 remaining.
Wayne State's lead remained at least 13 points the rest of the way.
The Warriors shot 35 percent (10-of-29) in the second half, but made 8-of-17 from inside the arc. After making 7-of-8 free throw attempts in the first half, WSU made 6-of-7 from the charity stripe in the second half to finish the game at 87 percent (13-of-15).
Brown led Wayne State with 30 points and 15 rebounds for her 22nd double-double of the season. Freshman
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) drained two triples and finished with seven points as 10 different Warriors scored.
Ciara Geiger led the Oilers with 15 points and five rebounds.
