WSU led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning but lost 5-4 in 11 innings.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (0-1) opened the 75th season in program history at Trevecca Nazarene (2-5) on Friday afternoon. WSU fell, 5-4, in 11 innings.

The Warriors led 4-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning but the Trojans scored a run in the eighth and ninth innings to force extra innings. An unearned run in the bottom of the 11th allowed TNU to walk-off with the victory.

WSU struck first with a fielder's choice RBI from Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) to plate Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) who walked to begin the frame. Sherman moved to second after a balk and took third following a single from Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle).

Zimmerman allowed the first Trojans base runner of the day to reach to lead off the bottom of the third inning via a walk. After a pop out and a strikeout, Carter Wiseman doubled home a run to tie the game at 1-1.

A TNU error to begin the top of the fifth inning allowed Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) to reach before a sacrifice bunt from Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) moved Loconsole into scoring position. Making his first career start, Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) collected his first career RBI. Sherman continued to have an impact at the top of the lineup with an RBI to extend WSU's lead to 3-1. Sherman later stole second before a fly out ended the rally.

The Trojans cut the deficit to one with a run on a sacrifice fly from Wiseman in the bottom of the fifth.

Zimmerman settled down and tallied his fifth and sixth strikeouts of the day to hang a zero in the bottom of the sixth.

Clifton, Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) and Zimmerman drew walks to begin the top of the eighth innings. A wild pitch allowed Clifton to score to give WSU a 4-2 lead.

Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) replaced Zimmerman to begin the bottom of the eighth inning. Hunter Newman tripled with one out to trim the visitors' lead to 4-3 after eight innings.

TNU began the ninth inning with a single followed by a sacrifice bunt and a wild pitch out the tying run at third. After a walk, Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) was summoned from the bullpen. He issues two more walks to plate a run and tie the game at 4-4.

In the bottom of the 11th inning, the Trojans drew a walk to begin the frame. Wiseman singles and would later come around to score the game-winning run on a WSU error.
