Men's Basketball Defeats Tiffin 64-58

Four Warriors in double figures led by Toma's 14 points.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (4-15 overall, 4-12 GLIAC) won its second league game in the past week with a 64-58 triumph over visiting Tiffin University (7-15 overall, 3-12 GLIAC) Thursday night at the Matthaei.  The win held additional significance as it was head coach David Greer's 200th win at Wayne State.

The Warriors were down four at intermission after a sluggish start.  Sophomore forward Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) scored on the game's opening possession, but the Dragons responded with seven straight points until sophomore center Joel Ndondo (Ajax, Ont.) split a pair from the foul line to make it 7-3.  A 9-0 TU run concluded on a triple by Zack Riddle.

WSU answered with a 12-3 spurt over the next five minutes to pull within four (19-15).  Ndondo and Lewis each had four points during the rally, while junior guard Gavin Toma (Troy, Mich. / Southfield Christian) and sophomore guard Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) each contributed a bucket.

Tiffin regained a nine-point advantage (24-15) with a 5-0 run, but the Warriors went on a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to two (26-24) in the final 100 seconds before intermission.  WSU had a chance to knot the game but a Toma jumper was blocked and Chrisean Marsden scored in the final seconds giving the Dragons a 28-24 halftime lead.  WSU shot 31 percent (9-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes compared to 46 percent (12-of-26) for the Dragons.

Wayne State was able to knot the contest at 28 as Ndondo and Lewis scored in the first 65 seconds of the second half.  TU's Ashton Khan converted a conventional three-point play before there were three lead changes in less than a minute.  A jumper from the paint by freshman forward Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) at the 16:19 mark put the Warriors ahead for good at 34-33.  On WSU's next possession, Key scored again and following a Tiffin free throw, Key knocked down another jumper.  Toma answered a Riddle bucket with one of his own and Key connected again for a six-point lead (42-36).

The Dragons pulled within four (45-41) on a Khan lay-up but Wayne State responded with an 8-1 run to open a 11-point margin (53-42) with 5:12 remaining.  WSU's lead was never less than seven until Tiffin's Antonio Pipkin drained a long triple in the final 10 seconds.

Toma led four Warriors in double figures with 14 points, which included an 8-for-8 performance from the foul line.  Lewis, Ndondo and Key each added 12 points with Toma grabbing a team-best six rebounds.  Wayne State had a season-low four turnovers including just one in the final 20 minutes.  WSU has had the three games with the fewest turnovers in the last three contests.  It was the first game this season the Warriors did not make at least two triples going 0of-r7 from beyond the arc.

Khan and Alex Brown led Tiffin with 12 points each, while Marsden contributed 10 points off the bench.  Korab Imami tallied a game-high eight rebounds for the Dragons.

Wayne State will travel to Ohio Dominican for a 3 p.m. tip on Saturday before starting on another three-game home stand.
