HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The 19th-ranked Wayne State University women's basketball squad (23-6 overall) concluded its 2014-15 campaign with a 71-63 setback in the second round of the NCAA Tournament to No. 4-ranked Lewis University (30-2 overall).
The Warriors were playing their second top 10 team in as many days on Saturday evening and made more field goals (27 to 23), had more rebounds (38 to 35), but after a late first half rally tied the game at 38, the Flyers outscored WSU 33-25 in the second half.
Senior center
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) totaled 14 points, 16 rebounds and a steal before fouling out late in the contest. Classmates
Ondrea Hughes (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Loy Norrix) and
Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup) tallied 13 and 11 points, respectively. Freshman
Shannon Wilson (W. Bloomfield, Mich.) contributed 13 points for Wayne State.
Lewis, who was ranked No. 1 in the nation for most of the year, had three starters in double figures led by GLVC Player of the Year Jamie Johnson, who totaled a game-high 20 points. Mariyah Brawner-Henley had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds, with Jess Reinhart adding 15 points.
WSU had an early 3-2 advantage following a conventional three-point play by Brown at the 18:05 mark, and led 8-7 less than two minutes later following a jumper by junior guard
Kristen Long (Corunna, Mich. / Durand) and a triple by junior
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich).
The teams traded leads six times over the next three minutes prior to a 9-0 run by the Warriors that was ignited by seven consecutive points from Wilson and concluded on a pair of free throws by Brown. The eight-point margin (21-13) would be WSU's largest lead of the game.
Lewis responded with a 17-4 spurt over the next 4:30 to take a 30-25 lead with just under seven minutes remaining before intermission. The Flyers made three of their four triples in the game during this run.
Wayne State was able to pull even at halftime (38-38) by outscoring Lewis 13-8 over the final six minutes, which included seven points from McCann.
WSU tied the game twice in the first 5:10 of the second half, but after drawing even at 44-44, the Flyers went on a 5-0 run as the Warriors went scoreless for over three minutes.
Wayne State battled back to knot the contest at 50 following two lay-ups by McCann in less than 25 seconds. This time Lewis answered with a 9-0 run as a 3:25 scoreless drought for the Warriors preceded a final push that saw WSU outscore LU 13-12 over the final six minutes with only four of the Flyers points coming on field goals.
The Warriors will graduate five players in Brown, Hughes, McCann, guard
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King), who did not play after being injured on Friday and graduate student
McKenzie Kudron (New Boston, Mich. /Huron).
