Baseball Wins in Extra Innings on Saturday

Griffin Harms' walk-off RBI single in the eighth inning gave Wayne State a 7-6 win in game two.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. -- The Wayne State University baseball team (4-6) split a doubleheader with Winona State (2-10) on Saturday at Chain of Lakes Park.  The NSIC version of the Warriors captured game one, 11-9, before the GLIAC version won, 7-6, in extra innings to take game two.

The Green & Gold have already played three extra inning contests this season, winning two.

Game One (L, 9-11)
Winona State scored first with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the second inning and broke the game open with seven runs including a grand slam in the third inning.

Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) and Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) began the fourth inning with back-to-back singles but Wayne State were unable to plate any runs.

The home Warriors extended their lead to 10-0 on a fielder's choice RBI in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Following a triple from Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle) in the fifth inning, pinch hitter Spencer Church (Windsor, Ont. / Holy Names) tallied his first RBI of the season with a single into right.  The rally continued in the sixth inning as Wayne State cut the deficit to 10-7 with six runs on four hits and thee Winona State errors.  Pinch hitter Kevin Moore (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) collected his first two RBIs as a Warrior during the comeback attempt.

Another home run put Winona State up 11-7 in the top of the sixth inning.

Baldwin added two runs on a single to center field, making the final score 11-9 as Wayne State's rally fell short.

Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont. / St. Anne Catholic) (0-1) started and lasted two 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (three earned).  Wayne State used four pitchers during game one including Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) who made his mound debut.

Game Two (W, 7-6 - Eight Innings)
A sacrifice fly Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) in the bottom of the first inning gave Wayne State a 1-0 lead.

Winona State answered with four runs in the second inning and another run in the third to take a 5-1 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Baldwin scored on a balk before an error allowed Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) to score. Clifton's sacrifice fly and an RBI single from Zimmerman tied the game at 5-5.

A solo home run off the bat of Travis Evanson put Winona State back on top 6-5.

Aaron Loconsole (Macomb, Mich. / Marine City) doubled home a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game. Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) (1-1) pitched scoreless frames in the seventh and eighth innings.

After two-out singles from Loconsole and Zimmerman in the bottom of the eighth inning, Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) delivered a walk-off RBI single to left field to give Wayne State the 7-6 victory.

Jake Davis (Rochester, Mich. / Stoney Creek) started the game and pitched five innings, allowing five earned runs while striking out three.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) also tossed a scoreless inning.  Zimmerman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
