NORTH CANTON, Ohio -- The Wayne State University baseball team (7-9, 1-3 GLIAC) concluded its first league series of the season on Sunday at Walsh (10-5, 3-1 GLIAC).
Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) threw a gem in game one to lead WSU to a 4-2 win but a ninth-inning wild pitch gave the Cavaliers a 6-5 win in the nightcap.
Game One (W, 4-2)Unlike the two games on Saturday, the Warriors scored the game's first run.
Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) singled after a double from
Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) to give WSU a 1-0 lead.
Wayne State kept the pressure on in the second inning. With the bases loaded,
Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central) flew out to right field for a sacrifice fly RBI.
The Cavaliers cut the deficit in half with an RBI double in the bottom of the third inning and then tied the game at 2-2 on a fielder's choice RBI.
Mergener's second RBI of the game gave the Warriors a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Tobey (2-1) tossed a scoreless sixth inning to keep Walsh trailing by one.
Dennis Olszewski (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Gabriel Richard) reached on an infield single to begin the seventh inning. He stole second and advanced to third on a groundout before scoring on a Walsh error.
Tobey danced around a WSU error and a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh inning to collect the victory and complete game. He struck out five while allowing two earned runs on four hits.
Game Two (L, 5-6)Walsh jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a RBI double in the bottom of the first inning and added a second run on an RBI groundout. Two more runs in bottom of the third inning extended the Cavs lead to 4-0.
Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) and
Bradley Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) collected RBIs in the top of the fourth inning to cut WU's lead to 4-2.
A Warrior error allowed Walsh's fifth run to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.
WSU loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning. Zimmerman drew a walk before Harms was hit by a pitch to cut the home lead to 5-4. Two Cavalier errors in the top of the eighth inning allowed a
Nathan Manis (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) double to tie the game at 5-5.
Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) replaced starter
Brandyn Hall (Sylvania, Ohio / Northview) (0-1) after a lead off triple to begin the ninth inning. A wild pitch during the next at-bat allowed Walsh to win the game, 6-5, and the series three games to one.
Hall pitched a career-high eight innings and allowed five earned runs on 10 hits while striking out three.
