Baseball Splits at Findlay on Sunday

The Warriors won game two 5-1 behind Jared Tobey's sixth win.

FINDLAY, Ohio -- With just one week remaining in the regular season, the Wayne State University baseball team (19-20-1, 13-12-1 GLIAC) split at Findlay (12-30, 7-19 GLIAC) on Sunday to remain in second place in the North Division. The Oilers won game one 3-2 in extra innings on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and used Jared Tobey's (St. Clair, Mich.) sixth win of the season to take game two 5-1.

The top two teams from each division make the GLIAC Tournament plus the next two teams with the best overall conference record.

Game One (L, 2-3 / Eight Innings)
The Oilers struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a run on an RBI single up the middle after a lead off triple.

WSU threatened in the top of the third inning by loading the bases after three walks but were unable to do any damage.

In the bottom of the third inning, Findlay capitalized on a Warrior error and a base hit to take a 2-0 lead.

The Warriors stranded two more runners in the top of the fourth inning and were unable to take advantage of a Findlay error. In the top of the sixth inning, WSU tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run, pinch-hit double from Ryan Mergener (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Portage Central). The visitors nearly took the lead in the frame on a Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) single through the right side but Mergener was thrown out at home to end the rally.

It looked like the Warriors were going to take the lead in the top of the seventh inning after back-to-back errors but the Oilers were able to escape with game still tied.

Starter Kyle Zimmerman (Frankfort, Mich.) (3-5) stayed on the hill as the game moved to extra innings. Findlay started the bottom of the eighth inning with a double. After a sacrifice bunt, a sacrifice fly to right field gave Findlay the 3-2 win.

Zimmerman pitched seven 1/3 innings and struck out five while allowing three runs in his fifth complete game of the season.

Game Two (W, 5-1)
Once again, the Oilers scored first as three hits in the bottom of the second inning netted a run.

A Findlay error and an RBI groundout from Mergener gave the Warriors a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

The Warriors responded with three runs on three hits and a Findlay error in the top of the sixth inning. Cole Clifton (Sterling Heights. Mich. / De La Salle), and Travis Rodery (Wyandotte, Mich. / Roosevelt) collected RBIs in the inning. WSU left the bases loaded but Tobey had all the run support he would need to improve to 6-1 on the season.

Jeff Sorenson (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) pitched the final one 2/3 innings and struck out three batters while not allowing a hit. Tobey struck out six over five 1/3 innings and allowed one earned run on five hits.

WSU will host Ohio Dominican on Wednesday for a nine-inning, non-conference game at 2 PM in the final home game of the season.
