TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (5-8, 1-3 GLIAC) could not hold onto a 2-0 match lead on Saturday at Tiffin (6-4, 3-1 GLIAC). The Warriors won the first set 25-21 and the second set 25-23 before the Dragons tied the match up at two wins apiece with set victories of 25-21 and 25-18. A back-and-forth fifth set was won by TU, 15-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED- Following back-to-back service aces from
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central), WSU led 8-3 to begin the first set. A kill from
Kelsey Bonewits (Griffith, Ind.) and two kills from
Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) extended the Warriors' lead to 16-9. A 3-0 run by Tiffin trimmed the deficit to 16-12 but WSU slowed the rally with a kill from
Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) and a combo block from Shell and Bonewits. Late in the game, Tiffin went on a 5-1 run to pull within three at 22-19. The Green & Gold were able to hang on for the 25-21 victory as Moore sealed the set with a kill.
- The Dragons led 6-1 early in the second set and forced
Tim Koth to take a timeout and regroup his team. WSU answered with a 13-5 run to take a 14-11 lead. A
Brittany Guldan (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central) kill and a Rodriguez ace, the Warriors were a point away from the victory at 24-20. However, three straight points by TU led to another WSU timeout. After the break, Moore collected her second set-winning kill.
- Wayne State led 10-6 to begin the third set as it had its eyes on a sweep. Tiffin had other plans and responded with a 5-0 run to regain the lead, 11-10. WSU won the race to 20 and led 20-17 after three straight attack errors by the home team. The Dragons ended the set on an 9-1 run to win 25-21.
- The tensions continued to rise in the fourth set and the two teams were tied 6-6 after a kill from Moore. Shell cut the deficit to one at 12-11 with a kill of her own. The blocking team of Bonewits and
Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) gave WSU a 15-14 advantage. TU led 17-15, 19-17 and would force a fifth set with a 25-18 victory. The Dragons won the final six points en route to the win.
-
Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) tied the deciding fifth set at 4-4 with a kill. The Warriors trailed by a point on several occasions but were unable to tie the set. The Warriors went on a 3-0 run to cut TU's lead to 14-13 but the Dragons were able to collect the final point and win the match 3-2.
