Women’s Basketball Overpowers Lake Erie

Shannon Wilson’s career-high 24 points leads WSU to 77-70 victory.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (8-9, 3-8 GLIAC) topped Lake Erie (5-12, 2-9 GLIAC) 77-70 on Thursday night, which began a three-game home stand for the Warriors.  After trailing by three at halftime (30-33), WSU outscored LEC 47-37 in the final 20 minutes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lake Erie jumped out to a 5-0 lead at the 8:38 mark.  Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) tied the game at 10-10 with a layup with 4:45 left to play in the opening quarter.  Sara Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic) kept the game tied at 16-16 with a jumper with less than one minute to play.  LEC's Shelby Carpenter knocked down one of her four triples on the night to give the Storm a three-point lead, 19-16, after 10 minutes.

- Shannon Wilson started the second quarter with a three-pointer to tie the game at 19-19.  The game remained deadlocked at 23-23 before LEC went on a 9-0 run powered by three treys to take a 32-23 lead at the 3:11 mark.  In the final 2:46, Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) scored five points to keep the Warriors within striking distance at halftime, with LEC leading 33-30.

- Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) connected on back-to-back jumpers including a three-pointer to give WSU its first lead of the night, 35-33.  The run reached 17-1 (dating back to the second quarter) after a three-point play from Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.), giving WSU a 40-33 advantage.  Two free throws from Christine Dawson trimmed LEC's deficit to two, 42-40, with 5:32 remaining in the third quarter.  At the 3:30 mark, a Shannon Wilson 10-foot jumper extended WSU's lead to 50-45.  The Storm's Dawson tied the game at 50-50 with a three-point play with 1:15 left in the third stanza.  An offensive rebound and a put back from Birchmeier gave the Warriors their lead back, 52-50.  Streetman followed with a jumper of her own as time expired to give WSU a 54-50 lead with the fourth quarter to play.

- India Hawkins (Lansing, Mich. / Everett) made her first appearance of the night and drilled a triple to start the fourth quarter, giving WSU a 57-52 lead.  LEC tied the game at 57-57 with 7:41 left to play on Carpenter's eighth field goal of the game.  Hawkins continued her solid fourth quarter with a jumper to give WSU a 64-57, capping a 7-0 run at the 5:31 mark.  Christine Green (Southfield, Mich. / Lathrup) extended WSU's lead to eight (70-62) after back-to-back layups at the three-minute mark.  A three-point play from Shannon Wilson with 2:33 on the clock gave the Warriors their largest lead of the night at 73-62.  WSU would control the final minutes and collect the 77-70 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Shannon Wilson finished with a career-high 24 points on 10-of-16 shooting.  Green posted 13 points and nine rebounds, while Streetman chipped in 12 points.

LEADING THE STORM
- Carpenter paced Lake Erie's offense with 24 points, while Kayla Gabor tallied 21 points.

BOX SCORE NOTES
- WSU shot 50.3 percent (32-54) compared to LEC's 40.3 shooting percentage.
- The Warriors won the rebounding battle 36-23.
- Wayne State was able to win despite 27 turnovers, which the Storm turned into 26 points.
- The Warriors used 27 points of their bench to help in the victory.
