Volleyball Drops Two Matches on Saturday

WSU was swept for just the second and third times this season.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- After getting back to its winning ways on Friday night, the Wayne State University volleyball program (18-7, 9-4 GLIAC) was swept by Lake Erie (16-12, 7-5 GLIAC) and fifth-ranked Wheeling Jesuit (27-2) in a doubleheader on Saturday.

MATCH ONE at LAKE ERIE (L, 3-0 / 20-25, 22-25, 18-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED

• A block and a kill from Mikayla Shell (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) gave Wayne State an 8-4 lead in the first set.  The Storm tied the set at 11-11 and the rest of the set would be within a point or two for the duration.  LEC did extend its lead to 20-16 after a 4-1 run. The home team took a 1-0 match lead with a 25-20 set-one victory.

• Avery Punches (Rockford, Mich.) notched a kill early in the second set to give the Warriors a 7-5 lead.  Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) kept WSU on top, 11-10, with a kill before Lake Erie responded and led 16-15.  LEC extended its lead to 21-17 before the Green & Gold began a late rally.  WSU cut the deficit to one at 23-22 before the Storm won the final two points to take the set.

• Looking for a sweep, Lake Erie jumped out to a 10-7 lead in the third set.  WSU pulled within two at 17-15 after a LEC attack error but that would be as close as the visitors would come as the Storm controlled the remainder of the game and won 25-18 to complete the 3-0 sweep.

MATCH TWO vs. #5 WHEELING JESUIT (L, 0-3 / 19-25, 21-25, 19-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED

• A combo block from Shell and Emily Norscia (Livonia, Mich. / Livonia Churchill) gave the Warriors a 6-4 lead in the first set.  A kill from Norscia kept WSU ahead 7-6 before Wheeling Jesuit won the next four points to take a 10-7 lead.  The Cardinals extended their lead to 17-9 and eventually won 25-19.

• Shell's kill early in the second set gave the visiting WSU squad an 8-7 advantage.  WSU continued to hold onto a narrow lead at 12-11 after a point from Norscia but WJU won the race to 20 after a kill by Emma Schleucher to make it 20-17 in favor of the the Cards.  WJU won the set 25-21 to go up 2-0 in the match.

• Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead in the third set.  However, WJU would go on an 8-0 run to take an 11-4 lead.  That run would be too much to overcome for the slumping Warriors as Wheeling Jesuit would win the set 25-19 and the match 3-0.
