Women's Basketball Falls At Lake Erie, 58-40

Streetman leads WSU with 12 points and becomes school's all-time leader in games played.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-14 overall, 5-13 GLIAC) suffered a 58-40 setback at Lake Erie College (8-16 overall, 5-13 GLIAC) Thursday evening.  The Warrior defeat coupled with wins by Northwood and Northern Michigan, eliminated WSU from GLIAC post-season possibilities.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors shot just 33 percent (4-of-12) from the floor in the opening quarter and had 11 turnovers.  Following three consecutive miscues by WSU to start the contest, a jumper by freshman guard India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison) knotted the game at 2-2 90 seconds into the match.

After a jumper by senior Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) cut the Wayne State deficit to two (6-4), the Storm tallied the next 10 points as the Warriors were scoreless for nearly 5:30 until a basket by freshman Brooke Wallace (Amherst, Ohio / Steele) made it 16-6.  A triple by sophomore guard Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) in the final minute kept the margin at 10 (19-9) after the first period.

A Shannon Wilson bucket started the second quarter scoring, but a three-minute drought led to Lake Erie taking a 25-11 lead.  WSU was outscored 11-9 over the final 5:30 of the second stanza.

Wayne State trailed 36-20 at halftime after having 17 turnovers and making just 8-of-26 from the field, including 2-of-9 from behind the arc.

In the third period, the Warriors were 3-of-5 from three-point range, but 0-for-7 on two-point field goals and 1-of-4 from the foul line and were outscored 11-10.

The fourth quarter was much of the same as the Storm held an 11-10 scoring edge.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Senior guard Brittany Streeetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) made three triples in scoring a team-best 12 points, while sophomore Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) also connected on three shots from beyond the arc in totaling 11 points.  Shannon Wilson grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.

TEAM STATS RECAP
The Warriors shot 27 percent (15-of-55) from the floor and 29 percent (7-of-24) from three-point range.  WSU connected on just 3-of-11 free throw attempts (27 percent).

Lake Erie was limited to 31 percent (19-of-62) from the field, along with a 3-of-25 (12 percent) performance from behind the arc.  The Storm made 17-of-24 foul shots (71 percent).

Wayne State had a 47-42 rebounding edge, but 26 WSU turnovers led to 30 points for LEC.
