ASHLAND, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball team (7-15, 7-12 GLIAC) fell 63-48 at No. 21 Ashland (21-4, 15-4 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon. WSU shot 21 percent in the first half and the offense would not find much more traction in the second 20 minutes. The loss snapped WSU's first three-game winning streak of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENEDBoth defenses controlled the tempo in the first half and Ashland led 3-2 after two AU free throws from Marsalis Hamilton at the 16:29 mark. The Eagles extended their lead to 9-4 with a jumper at the 13:24 mark. Boo Osborne added a lay-up at the 10-minute mark, putting the Eagles ahead 13-9.
Both teams went scoreless until the 5:56 mark when
George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) knocked down a jumper, trimming AU's lead to 13-11. An 8-0 run by the Eagles pushed the Warrior deficit to 10 (21-11) with 2:55 to play.
Clark Bishop (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance) knocked down his second three-pointer of the half with 37 seconds left to keep WSU close at 25-17 but a late Wendell Davis lay-up extended the home lead back to 10 (27-17).
The Warriors started the second half on a 10-5 run to cut their deficit to five (32-27) at the 15-minute mark. Ashland, however, would respond with a 16-1 run to take a 48-31 advatange at the 10:25 mark. As WSU's offense struggled, the Eagles continued to possess the momentum and led 54-35 with eight minutes to play.
Wayne State was unable to get its offense going and Ashland would cruise to a 63-48 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORSBishop led WSU with 10 points, while
Michael Lewis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) scored eight points and collected a game-high 10 rebounds.
LEADING THE EAGLESOsborne tallied a game-high 16 points for Ashland.
UP NEXTIn the final road game of the campaign, Wayne State will travel to Malone on Thursday night (8 p.m.) before returning to the Matthaei for the final two regular-season games of the year.
