Cold Third Quarter Dooms Women's Basketball

Wayne State falls at Tiffin, 64-58, on Thursday night.

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (10-12, 5-11 GLIAC) dropped a league road contest at Tiffin (6-15, 4-12 GLIAC) on Thursday night, 64-58, as GLIAC teams begin the second round of divisional play.  A cold third quarter and a stretch of seven minutes to start the fourth quarter where WSU made just one field goal would prove to be the difference as the Dragons avenged a Jan. 21st WSU victory in Detroit.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ashley Wilson (Portage, Mich. / Northern) began the scoring with a jumper at the 9:43 mark of the first quarter.  However, TU's Ali Schirmer capped an 8-2 run with a three-pointer at the seven-minute mark, giving the Dragons an 11-9 lead.  After a Nina Foster (Lansing, Mich. / Everett) layup the game was tied at 11-11 with five minutes to play in the opening quarter.  Bre Nauman put the Dragons up 20-16 with a jumper with 1:37 remaining, which would be the score at the conclusion of the first stanza.

- The Warriors started the second quarter on a 9-0 run to take a 25-20 lead at the 6:50 mark.  The run included a three-point play from Ashley Wilson.  Another Nauman jumper plus a free throw completed a three-point play to tie the game at 27-27 with 4:13 to play before halftime.  WSU ended the half on an 8-2 run including two baskets from Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) put the intermission score at 35-29.  The Green & Gold outscored Tiffin 19-9 in the second period.  WSU held TU to just one made field goal over the final four minutes.

- A jumper and a trey from Schirmer to start the third quarter trimmed the deficit to three (37-34) after two minutes of play.  Streetman and Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) helped the Warriors slow the rally with two buckets to extend WSU's lead to 41-34 at the 6:13 mark.  Nauman kept the home team close (43-42) with a triple at the 4:17 mark.  After a three-point basket from Ashley Wilson to give WSU a 46-42 lead at the three-minute mark, Tiffin went on an 8-0 run to take a 50-46 lead at the end of the third quarter.  Tiffin outscored Wayne State 21-11 in the third stanza.

- The TU run reached 13-0 to start the fourth quarter as the Dragons jumped out to a 55-46 lead at the 9:11 mark.  India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) connected on WSU's first field goal since Ashley Wilson's triple with three minutes to play in the third quarter at the 8:33 point of the final quarter.  Nauman stretched TU's lead to double digits (59-48) with a three-pointer at the seven-minute mark.  Back-to-back layups from Ashley Wilson cut the home lead to 61-56 with 1:49 to play.  On the next possession, Brooke Wallace (Oberlin, Ohio / Amherst Steele) followed with a basket to bring the Warriors within three.  With 14 seconds left, Streetman had an opportunity to tie the game but her three-point attempt found only iron and TU would sink three of its four free throw attempts, securing the six-point win.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Ashley Wilson paced WSU's offense with 20 points, while Streetman scored 13 points.

BOX SCORE NOTES
