MIDLAND, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (5-1 overall, 5-1 GLIAC) dropped its first match of the season Tuesday, falling to host Northwood University (7-0 overall, 7-0 GLIAC).
Two of the three wins for the Warriors came from the doubles division. Senior
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) won 8-5 over Olesia Riabchuk and Kate Berestovenko at No. 2, while freshmen
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands) defeated Vasilisa Mikhaylova and Elizaveta Velichko, 8-3, in the third flight.
Wayne State's lone singles win came at No. 4, as senior
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil) won 4-6, 7-6 (6), 10-8 over Mikhaylova.
RESULTS
- Ghellere and junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) fell at No. 1 doubles, losing 8-3 to Carol Arnez-Mercado and Tetyana Pavych.Â
- Mirache lost 7-6, 7-6, 7-3 to Riabchuk at No. 1 singles.Â
- Kuznetsova was defeated by Tetyana Pavych in the second flight, 6-3, 6-0.
- Da-Silva went three sets with Carol Arnez-Mercado in the third flight, falling 6-0, 3-6, 6-3.
- Liong played the fifth flight, falling 6-1, 6-2 to Kate Berestovenko.
- In the final flight, van Meer dropped a 6-3, 6-3 contest to Velichko.

The Warriors will return home for two weekend matches, hosting Ferris State for a 2 p.m. Friday meeting before Grand Valley State visits for a 10 a.m. first serve.Â
