TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team improved to 4-0 overall and in the GLIAC Wednesday, defeating Tiffin University (4-1 overall, 3-1 GLIAC) 6-3 in the first true road contest of the season.
Seniors
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) and
Liz Ghellere (Ararangua, Brazil), along with junior
Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia), were all double winners in the match.
Mitrache won at No. 1 singles over the Dragons' Adel Musina (6-2, 6-4) and paired with freshman
Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont. / Robert Bateman S.S.) for a second flight doubles win over Anais Geslin and Juliette Sirgant (8-3). Â Kuznetsova and Ghellere paired up for the fourth time this season at No. 1 doubles, winning 8-3 over Musina and Emily Sim. Â In singles, Kuznetsova won 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the second flight agianst Abbie Jade Riley, while Ghellere won 5-7, 6-0, 6-3 over Lauren Prince in the fourth flight.
The Dragons won the third doubles flight, as Riley and Prince held off freshmen
Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and
Irena van Meer (Amsterdam, Netherlands), 9-7. Â The Dragons also took the third singles flight, with Sim defeating Da-Silva 6-3, 6-4.
Liong battled back, winning at No. 5 over Milah Ryland (6-1, 6-2). Â In the final contest of the afternoon, freshman
Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont. / Hon. W.C. Kennedy Collegiate) lost to Geslin, 6-1, 6-0.
UP NEXT
The Warriors will have two more GLIAC road swings, starting Friday at Saginaw Valley State with a noon first serve. On Tuesday, WSU will travel to Northwood for a 2 p.m. meeting.
