DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (14-12, 9-6 GLIAC) hosted Davenport (12-14, 8-7 GLIAC) and the Warriors were unable to hold onto a 2-0 match lead as the Panthers won in five sets. WSU has secured its spot in the GLIAC Tournament and will be traveling to either Northern Michigan or Grand Valley State. Final seeding will be determined after Saturday's regular-season finale.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- WSU led 6-2 early in the opening set after a kill from Julia Malewicz (Macomb, Mich. / Utica Academy for International Studies / Henry Ford II). The lead grew to 14-7 but DU would trim the deficit to one at 21-20 after a 5-1 run. The Warriors won four of the final five points to win the game 25-21.
- A Panther error gave WSU a 6-5 lead in the second set.
Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) put the Green & Gold on top 14-8 and the home team would cruise out to a 22-13 advantage. The feisty Panthers fought back and trailed 22-20 and 23-21. The team traded points before WSU collected its 25th point of the set to win 25-22.
- Wayne State led 6-3 and eventually 10-7 after a point by
Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield). However, DU would come back and take a 12-10 lead. The rest of the set was tight;y contested and the teams were tied at 16-16 and 19-19.
Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) kept the set tied at 22-22 with a point but the Panthers won three of the final four points to avoid the sweep, 25-23.
- The visitors led 9-4 to begin the fourth set and kept the momentum the rest of the night. DU led 16-9 before WSU cut the deficit to one at 19-18 on a kill from Asiedu. That would be the final point for the Warriors as Davenport ended the set on 6-0 run to force a fifth set.
- WSU could never find its footing during the fifth set and trailed 3-0 early before DU opened up a 12-3 advantage. The Panthers completed the comeback with a 15-5 victory.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Malewicz led WSU with 16 kills, while Richardson tallied 12.
Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) collected 50 assists and
Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) led the defense with 25 digs.
UP NEXT
- Wayne State will conclude the regular season against Purdue Northwest on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The Warriors will recognize their four seniors prior to first serve.
