Women's Basketball Hits Single-Game Record 16 Three-Pointers in Win At Oakland City

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (3-0 overall) hit a single-game record 16 three-pointers as the Warriors cruised to a 105-36 victory over host Oakland City (0-3 overall) on Thursday night.

Junior Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford) led all scorers with 19 points and accounted for five of the field goals from beyond the arc.  Senior Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) added 17 points with three triples, while junior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) added 11 points and connected on three 3's.

The Warriors set several marks in the record books.  WSU attempted 35 three-pointers, which tied for the fifth most in program history.  The 105-point total is the sixth highest total at WSU, and the team also grabbed 61 rebounds, good for third best.

Murphy set a career high for points, as did sophomore Lyndsey Matus (Milbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) with eight points, freshman Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich. / Belleville) with eight points, junior Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich. / Flat Rock) with six points and freshman Cydney Williams (Canton, Mich. / Arbor Prep) with four points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors scored just eight seconds into the contest after Wilson connected on a layup.  It was the start of an 11-0 run in the opening minutes of the game.  The Warriors got four points from Wilson, five points from Murphy and three from sophomore Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich.) in the first 2:26, forcing a quick OCC timeout.

Wayne State held the Mighty Oaks to just one field goal in the second quarter, while exploding offensively.  Murphy drained four of her triples in that frame, while Hawkins added one of her own. WSU went into the break with a comfortable 58-14 lead.

It was enough to hold off Oakland City.  Wayne State scored 21 points in the third period, while holding Oakland City to just four more in the third, allowing the Warriors to open up the rotation in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Alex Matus (Milbury, Ohio / Toledo Catholic Central) hit a triple with 1:04 to play, setting the new three-point mark.  With six seconds remaining, Perez hit one last triple to add on to the new mark.

The Warriors will take Friday off before traveling to Evansville, Ind. to face Southern Indiana for a 7 p.m. Eastern tip on Saturday.
