DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team improved to 4-1 overall with a 101-46 triumph over visiting Wright State Lake (1-7 overall) Tuesday evening at the Matthaei. The Lakers are members of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors scored the first eight points of the contest on triples by junior
Jessica Murphy (Oxford, Mich.) and senior
Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills), sandwiched around a lay-up by senior
Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.).
After a pair of free throws by WSL's Onyx Lopez, WSU rattled off the next nine points for a 17-2 advantage with just under four minutes remaining in the opening stanza. Wilson started the spurt with a bucket and Murphy followed with another long range shot. After two free throws by sophomore
Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep), freshman
Cydney Williams (Canton, Mich. / Arbor Prep) had a steal and fast break lay-up.
Wayne State had a 12-10 scoring edge over the final 3:35 of the first period to lead 29-12 after 10 minutes.
A triple by Lopez started the second quarter scoring, and after a pair of foul shots by WSL's Nicole Fogt made it 31-18, the Warriors tallied 18 of the next 19 points for a 49-19 lead near the mid-point of the second period.
A lay-up by junior
Paige Villemure (Flat Rock, Mich.) in the final seconds of the first half capped off a 10-4 WSU run giving the hosts a 59-23 lead at intermission.
Wayne State scored the first four points after halftime on lay-ups by Birchmeier and Chambers. Following a jumper by Lopez, the Warriors scored the next 12 points for a 75-25 lead with 3:30 remaining in the third period.
TEAM STATS
WSU connected on 64 percent (38-of-59) of its field goal attempts, while Wright State Lake shot 27 percent (14-of-52). Wayne State was 8-of-21 (38 percent) from three-point range, compared to 32 percent (6-of-19) for the Lakers. The Warriors were 17-of-21 (81 percent) from the charity stripe, with WSL making 12-of-18 (67 percent) free throw attempts.
WSU had a 40-26 edge in rebounding along with posting 18 assists for 12 turnovers.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sophomore
Sadia Johnson (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Central) posted a game-high 16 points off the bench, while grabbing seven rebounds. Chambers chipped in with 15 points and a game-best four steals. Murphy drained four triples in scoring 14 points, with both Wilson and freshman
Tori Perez () contributing 11 points.
Cydney Williams grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
LEADING THE LAKERS
Fogt and Lopez each scored eight points to lead WSL, with Fogt grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds.

Wayne State will conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 3 p.m. tip-off on Sunday at home against Michigan-Dearborn.
