Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. -- The 24th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (18-5 overall) received two outstanding pitching performances on Friday as both
Lyndsay Butler and
Megan Guitar tossed one-hit shutouts as the Warriors extended their winning streak to eight games. WSU blanked Seton Hill (4-8 overall) 2-0 in the opener before whitewashing Clarion (1-16 overall) 8-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
GAME ONE RECAP
After a scoreless first two innings,
Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) led off the bottom of the third by blasting a 2-2 offering over the center field fence.
Lyndsay Butler (Cambridge, Ont.) followed with a bunt single, then stole second. She advanced to third on a ground out by
Allie Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) and scored on a ground out by
Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.).
The lone base runner for the Griffins was a leadoff double in the second inning by Amanda Huff. Pinch-runner Allison Kapoll went to third on a ground out, that was sandwiched around a pair of strikeouts.
IN THE CIRCLE
Butler retired 21 of the 22 batters she faced, including the final 18. Butler struck out 11 to improve to 11-4 on the year and notch her fifth shutout.
Huff pitched the first four innings allowing the two earned runs on four hits with one strikeout. Leighann Pettis tossed the final three innings, blanking the Warriors on two hits. She struck out one and did not walk a batter, but hit one.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Butler went 3-for-4 with a run scored, while
Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) went 2-for-3 with a double.
GAME TWO RECAP
Wayne State scored twice in both the bottom of the second and the fourth, then ended the contest with a four-run fifth inning.
Guitar smacked a one-out triple in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.). McClounie had a two-out base hit, stole second before scoring on a single by
Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.).
Guitar also started the fourth inning rally with a one-out single. After stealing second, Guitar crossed the plate on a double by Messina. McClounie made it back-to-back RBI doubles increasing the WSU advantage to 4-0.
Lucas led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk, before
Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) worked a seven pitch walk. Guitar followed with another seven pitch walk to load the bases. Messina was plunked with a 1-2 offering plating Lucas. McClounie followed with a sacrifice fly before
Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont.) produced a two-run single to end the game.
IN THE CIRCLE
Guitar faced just 17 batters in the five innings surrendering just a one-out double in the first, and hitting a batter with two outs in the fifth. She struck out nine and did not walk a batter to earn her sixth consecutive victory to start 2017.
Paige Baker hurled the first four innings for the Golden Eagles allowing four earned runs on eight hits. She walked one but did not record a strikeout. Macy Rubin worked the fifth inning allowing four earned runs on one hit, three walks and a hit by pitch.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
Guitar went 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored, while Messina had three RBI. McClounie contributed two hits and two RBI.
