GROSSE POINTE WOODS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University baseball program (14-7, 4-0 GLIAC) would have liked its home opener to have been in Detroit but two wins over Findlay (14-7, 5-5 GLIAC) on Saturday was a nice way to start the "home" season. The Warriors used a fifth-inning RBI single from
Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic) and great pitching from
Chris Horvath (Lakeshore, Ont.) (4-1) and
Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) to win game one 2-1 before
Justin Kelly's (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) eighth-inning homerun in game two powered WSU to a 3-2 victory.
The games were played at University Liggett High School due to ongoing construction at Harwell Field.
GAME ONE (W, 2-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wayne State took an early lead in the bottom of the second with a leadoff homerun from
Devin Rose (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Orchard Lake St. Mary's) to left field. The Oilers answered immediately with a run on two hits in the top of the third inning but that would be all UF could muster in the series opener.
- Following a leadoff walk to
Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) and a wild pitch, Baldwin sent a screamer through the left side resulting in a play at the plate where Carrell deftly avoided the tag for the go-ahead tally.
- Horn finished his two innings of work with two strikeouts in the seventh inning for his fourth save of the season.
ON THE MOUND
- Horvath struck out four batters over five innings and allowed an earned run on six hits and a walk. Horn retired four via the strikeout in two innings, allowing just one base runner.
GAME TWO (W, 3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Rose sent the second pitch of game two over the field fence for his second big fly of the day, staking WSU to an early 1-0 lead. Findlay answered with two runs on three hits in the top of the fourth inning.
- The Green & Gold tied the contest at 2-2 with a Baldwin RBI single up the middle to score
Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) after he reached on a leadoff bunt single. Both teams were quiet as
Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) (2-0) dazzled on the mound, appearing in relief to keep the game tied. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Kelly sent a moon shot over the fence in left center field for the go-ahead run. Nelson struck out the side in the ninth and the Warriors secured their sixth consecutive win.
ON THE MOUND
-
Hunter Brown (St. Clair, Mich. / Lakeview) started and pitched five innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, while striking out two Oilers. Nelson struck out seven batters in four innings and the only batter to reach was via a walk.
UP NEXT
- The Warriors will conclude the four-game series with Findlay on Sunday with two games in Ohio. The doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
