Baseball Splits with Northwood on Saturday

WSU took game one 3-1 behind a strong pitching performance from Jared Tobey.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University baseball team (23-12, 13-5 GLIAC) concluded its 10-game home stand and the series against Northwood (27-8, 14-3 GLIAC) on Sunday by splitting the doubleheader.  The Warriors won game one 3-1 before falling 20-11 in game two.

GAME ONE (W, 3-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Wayne State struck first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning in game two.  JT Conti (Trenton, Mich.) plated the game's first run with an RBI double into center and Sean Winkelseth (Ypsilanti, Mich.) sent a sacrifice fly to center to give WSU a 2-0 lead.

- Northwood scored a run on one hit and a WSU error in the top of the fourth inning to trim deficit to 2-1 but that would be all the offense NU would muster.  Conti gave the Warriors an insurance run in the bottom of the fourth inning with a sac fly to center.

Starter Jared Tobey (St. Clair, Mich.) (3-3) worked around two walks and a wild pitch to keep NU quiet in the fifth inning, striking out three batters.  Taylor Horn (Leo, Ind.) worked the final two innings to secure the victory.

AT THE PLATE
- Conti drove in two of WSU's three runs.

ON THE MOUND
- Tobey struck out six batters over five innings, while allowing an earned run on three hits and four walks.  Horn earned his eighth save of the season abd struck out five batters over his two innings of work.

GAME TWO (L, 11-20)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- Northwood scored two runs in the top of the first inning and WSU answered with with three in the bottom of the inning.  Griffin Harms (Bingham Farms, Mich. / Birmingham Groves) tied the game with a two-run single into right center and Patrick Adams (Detroit, Mich. / De La Salle) put WSU on top with an RBI groundout.

-  The Timberwolves took a 4-4 lead with two runs in second inning but the Green & Gold were able to respond once again.  Wayne State scored three runs ont wo hits and an NU error.  Justin Sherman (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer) walked, advanced to third on a failed pick-off attempt and scored on a wild pitch.  Brad Baldwin (Troy, Mich. / Bishop Foley Catholic)  gave WSU a 5-4 lead with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly from Harms later in the frame extended WSU's lead to 6-4.

- NU scored five runs in the third inning, two in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take a 13-6 lead.  Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) singled the right side in the bottom of the fifth inning plated WSU's seventh run.  The T-Wolves exploded for five runs in the seventh inning to stretch lead to 18-8.

- In the bottom of the seventh inning, Baldwin sent an RBI single into center field but NU answered with its 19th run in the top of the eighth inning.  Northwood added its 20th and final run in the ninth before Jeremy Carrell (St. Clair, Mich.) hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth inning to end the scoring and out the final score at 20-11.

AT THE PLATE
- Baldwin went 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Carrell also drove in two runs.  Harms posted a 2-for-4 game with three RBI.

ON THE MOUND
- Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) 2-2) started and allowed nine earned runs on nine hits and two walks over two and 2/3 innings.  Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) pitched an inning, while Addison Pawelek (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle), Nolan Dill (Bowling Green, Ohio), Tyler Tompson (Farmington, Mich.) and Horn worked the final six and 2/3 innings.

UP NEXT
- WSU will play a doubleheader at Hillsdale on Wednesday beginning at 2 p.m.
