DETROIT -- The Wayne State University Department of Athletics honored the Warrior student-athletes who recorded at least a 3.50 grade-point average for the Fall 2016 term during its 17th annual Academic Recognition Luncheon held earlier today at the Mort Harris Recreation and Fitness Center on the WSU campus.
Eight Deans' Award winners were also recognized for having the highest cumulative grade-point average among all student-athletes in that particular college:
* College of Liberal Arts and Sciences -
Andreea Mitrache (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Warren Cousino) is a senior co-captain on the women's tennis team. Mitrache, who is a dual spanish and psychology major, was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all seven semesters at WSU with three 4.00 terms. A 2015 GLIAC Commissioner's Award recipient, Mitrache has missed the last year-and-a-half due to an injury but will compete next fall as a redshirt senior. She was the 2015-16 GLIAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year and earned First Team All-GLIAC honors for the second consecutive year in 2015.
* College of Education -
Holly Krill (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central) is a senior diver on the women's swimming and diving team. Krill is a early childhood/elementary education major, who has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all seven semesters. She is a three-time GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team honoree and also received CSCAA Scholar All-America accolades three straight years. Krill scored points at the conference championship all four years on both boards.
* Mike Ilitch School of Business -
Aaron Weston (Comstock Park, Mich. / Rockford) was a redshirt senior on the football team and is receiving his second consecutive Deans' Award. Weston, who double majored in accounting and finance, was selected as the WSU Football Scholar-Athlete Award recipient for the second straight season last December. He has earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all nine semesters at WSU, including four 4.00 terms. Weston played in 43 games for the Green and Gold catching three touchdown passes as a tight end.
* College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts -
Shannon McNamara (Lansing, Mich. / Mason) is in her third year as a member of the women's golf squad. A journalism major, McNamara has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) four times. She was named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for 2015-16 and was also the recipient of the DII ADA Academic Achievement Award.
* College of Engineering -
Zuzanna Sobczak (Gdansk, Poland) is a senior on the women's fencing team. Sobczak, who majors in civil engineering, has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all seven semesters, including four 4.00 terms. A two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honoree, Sobczak earned All-America accolades for the third consecutive year last month with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Collegiate Fencing Championships.
* College of Nursing -
Leah Coonrod (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Gull Lake) is a senior on the women's cross country, and track and field squads and is receiving her second consecutive Deans' Award. Coonrod, who is a nursing honors major, has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) six semesters, including four 4.00 terms. She has also been a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
* Eugene Applebaum College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences -
Kaitlyn Schnur (Canton, Mich.) is a senior on the cheerleading team and is majoring in occupational therapy. Kaitlyn will be graduating with her master's degree in occupational therapy in December of 2017. She has earned a 4.00 term GPA for six consecutive semesters and has been on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all seven terms.
* Honors College -
Emily Smith (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams) is a senior on the dance team and is majoring in urban studies. She has been named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll (term gpa 3.5+) all three semesters at WSU, including two 4.00 terms.
Twenty-five (25) student-athletes recorded a perfect 4.00 term GPA with a record 73 percent of Warrior student-athletes receiving above a 3.00 for the recently completed Fall semester.
