Volleyball Completes Comeback at GVSU

The Warriors erased a 2-0 deficit to win in five sets over the Lakers.

ALLENDALE, Mich. -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (7-4, 3-0 GLIAC) dropped the first two sets at Grand Valley State (5-6, 2-1 GLIAC) on Tuesday night but stormed back to win three straight sets and take the match in five games.  It is the first time that the Warriors have topped the Lakers since 2011, snapping a seven-match losing streak.

GVSU won the first two sets by scores of 25-22 and 25-17.  However, WSU answered with victories of 25-23 and 25-22 to force a fifth set.  The Green & Gold controlled the majority of the fifth game and won 15-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Lakers led the opening set 10-7 and eventually 17-11.  The Warriors took a 21-20 lead after a 5-0 run capped by three straight GVSU attack errors.  The home team won five of the final six points to take the set.

- Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) kept WSU close in the second set with a kill to trim GVSU's advantage to 5-4.  The Lakers lead grew to 17-11 following a WSU service error and they would go on to win 25-17.

- A combo block by Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) gave the Warriors a 6-2 lead to open the third set.  Back-to-back kills from Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) extended that lead to 13-7.  Frazee added a kill to give WSU a 20-14 lead before the Lakers pulled within a point, 21-20, after a 5-0 rally.  Wayne State fought for the final five points to avoid the sweep and win 25-23.

- Consecutive service aces from Madison Kielty (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton) gave the visitors an 8-6 lead in the fourth set.  Two kills from Richardson powered the Warriors to an 18-12 lead and WSU would force a fifth set by winning the game 25-22.  Wayne State did have the battle through a late 7-0 run by Grand Valley State to earn the victory.

- The fifth set was tied at 3-3 before the Warriors won the next six points, including three clutch kills from Krenz.  Richardson ended the match with back-to-back kills to secure the win, 15-7.

- Richardson posted her third career 20-kill match, finishing with 24 kills on 70 swings and just four errors (.286 hitting percentage).  Krenz collected 12 kills, while Moore notched 10.  Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) dished out a season-high 51 assists.  Moore earned 24 digs, while Richardson had 15, Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) had 13 and Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) tallied 11.  As a team, WSU blocked 15 GVSU attack attempts.
