Men's Basketball Drops Third Straight

Northern Michigan used a 19-0 run in the second half to best Wayne State 83-74.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (8-8 overall, 6-5 GLIAC) hosted Northern Michigan (10-7 overall, 7-3 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and a cold second half gave NMU a 83-74 victory and pushed WSU's losing streak to three.  WSU led at halftime, 35-34, but a 19-0 NMU run in the second half would be too much to overcome for Wayne State.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The visiting Wildcats started fast and led 10-4 at the 16:50 mark.  Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) tied the contest at 10-10 with a trey from the top of the key with 13:34 left in the first half.  The game was tied 18-18 at the 9:13 mark before Booth gave the Warriors the lead with a running jumper.  WSU continued to apply the pressure as George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) connected from deep with 6:53 left in the stanza to push the home advantage to five, 23-18.  Another Booth trey extended the lead to eight at the 4:05 mark.  NMU stormed back to tie the game at 32-32 with just under a minute remaining.  Spencer hit another triple before NMU's Naba Echols beat the buzzer with a layup to put the halftime score at 35-34 in favor the Green & Gold.

- A three-pointer from Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) early in the second half kept Wayne State on top, 40-36, at the 18:18 mark.  Jordan Perez tied the game for NMU with a bucket, but Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) converted a three-point play to help WSU regain a three-point lead.  The advantage grew to six (50-44) on a triple from Booth, which also drew a foul but Booth was unable to collect the four-point play.  A 19-0 run by the Wildcats blew the game open and gave NMU a 63-50 lead at the 7:38 mark.  With NMU leading by 15, WSU used a 9-0 run, which took 1:55 of game time and trimmed the visitors lead to 67-61 with 4:20 remaining.  Moore knocked down a triple and Key followed with a 17-foot jumper to end the rally.  The deficit remained at six with 42 seconds remaining after a three-pointer from Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich./ River Rouge).  Wayne State would run out of time and NMU left Motown with an 83-74 victory.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Booth led five Warriors scoring in double-digits, finishing with 18 points.  Spencer notched 16 points and 12 rebounds to post his second straight double-double and third of the season.  Key tallied 15 points, while Moore had 12 and Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) chipped in 10 points.  Moore also dished out a game-high seven assists.

LEADING THE WILDCATS
- Isaiah Johnson scored a game-high 30 points and Echols went 14-of-16 from the free throw line on his way to 20 points.
