Women's Tennis Sweeps Top-Seeded GVSU in GLIAC Semifinals

MIDLAND, Mich. -- The No. 4 Wayne State University women's tennis squad (10-2 overall, 7-2 GLIAC) had a 4-0 win over top-seeded Grand Valley State University (9-2 overall, 8-1 GLIAC) in the GLIAC semifinals on Saturday.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Senior Dasha Kuznetsova (Moscow, Russia) and redshirt sophomore Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) won at the first flight in their tight match against Vera Griva and Marily Canellopoulos, 7-5.

At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) and freshman Laura Cazacu (London, England) pulled a 6-3 win over Madi Ballard and Nikki Heiniger.

Senior Astrid Ciellza (Tecumseh, Ont.) and sophomore Stephanie Stamate (Windsor, Ont.) fell short against Liv Christman and Marija Leleo at No. 3 doubles, 6-1.

SINGLES RESULTS
Kuznetsova played an impressive match at No. 1 singles. Her opponent Griva had not lost a set all season until Kuznetsova defeated her in the GLIAC semifinals (6-3, 6-2).

At No. 3 singles, Liong played a tight match against Canellopoulos. After losing in a tiebreaker in the first set and winning the second set, she put it away with a win in the third (6-7 (7-5), 7-5, 6-4).

Da-Silva won her No. 4 singles match against Christman in a second-set tiebreaker (6-1, 7-6 (6-1)).

Cazacu (No. 2), sophomore Tanja Skalda (Prien Am Chiemsee, Germany) (No. 5), and freshman Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) (No. 6) were not able to finish their matches before WSU claimed the victory.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will play for the GLIAC title in the championship match on Sunday, Oct. 28, against the winner of the No. 2 Northwood vs. No. 3 Michigan Tech match.
