Women's Basketball Wins 73-71 In Final Seconds

Chambers scores game-winning bucket.

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (1-2 overall) recorded its first win of the young campaign with a 73-71 road victory at Tiffin University (2-2 overall) Saturday afternoon as junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) scored the winning bucket with 2.3 seconds remaining.

The Warriors led 6-0 on triples by senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic).  A conventional three-point play by Williams pushed the lead to eight (11-3) four minutes into the game.

A triple by freshman Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) ended a 6-0 run by the Dragons.  WSU had a 10-point advantage (20-10) following a bucket by Chambers but TU responded with eight points in the final two minutes of the period.

Another shot from beyond the arc by Williams started the second quarter scoring.  A traditional three-point play by sophomore Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) near the mid-point of the second period extended the Warrior margin to 10 (36-26).  Tiffin made three triples to pull within four (39-35), then cut the Wayne State lead to two (42-40) before freshman Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) concluded the first half scoring with a pair of free throws.

A three pointer by Matus and a lay-up from freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) increased the WSU lead to eight (50-42) just over three minutes into the second half.

TU went on an 11-7 run to end the stanza and reduce the Wayne State margin to four (57-53) entering the final 10 minutes.

Every time the Warriors scored to extend their lead, Tiffin answered back and eventually the hosts knotted the game at 65-65 on a triple by Ali Schirmer with 5:31 remaining.  A basket by Chambers was negated by two foul shots from TU's Brooke Wesner which tied the score at 67-67 with 4:01 left.

After Chambers split a pair from the charity stripe, Dragon Sarah Cummings made two free throws giving Tiffin a 69-68 lead with 3:33 left.  Eighteen seconds later, Williams made the second of two foul shots to even the score at 69-69.

Cummings again made two free throws with 2:23 remaining putting the Dragons ahead 71-69.

A steal and coast-to-coast lay-up by Chambers with 1:48 left tied the game at 71-71.

Williams deflected a Tiffin pass in the final 20 seconds which ended up in Miller's hands preceded a Warrior timeout.  Chambers scored on a lay-up with 2.3 seconds left and Wayne State stole the in-bounds pass to preserve the victory.
