Men's Basketball Falls 79-76 At Detroit On Late Bucket

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball squad dropped a 79-76 exhibition contest Saturday night at Detroit Mercy's Calihan Hall.

The Warriors made more field goals (31-26), more triples (10-7), had more assists (23-9), nearly had the same number of rebounds (44-47), and equaled the Titans mark of 28 points in the paint, but Detroit was awarded 32 free throw opportunities compared to seven for WSU.

Despite trailing 31-20 with just under eight minutes remaining before intermission, Wayne State scored 20 of the final 29 points of the opening half to knot the contest at 40-40 at halftime on a three pointer by senior Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan).  Sophomore Darian Owens-White (Ypsilanti, Mich. / River Rouge) led the Warriors with 11 points at the break, while junior Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) contributed 10 points.

After an Owens-White jumper started the second half scoring, the Titans went on a 16-7 run to take a 56-49 lead with just under 13 minutes left.

WSU pulled within two (56-54) on a conventional three-point play by junior Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International).

Detroit led by eight (73-65) with just 61 seconds remaining, but a jumper by senior Javon Henderson (Detroit, Mich. / University Prep) preceeded three consecutive triples by the Warriors from Davis, Jr, freshman Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) and sohomore Jacob Joubert (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington), which knotted the contest at 76-76 with 13.2 seconds remaining.

Detroit's Josh McFolley connected on a three-pointer with 1.8 on the clock to give the hosts the victory.
