Volleyball Falls at SVSU in GLIAC Quarterfinal

WSU concludes season with a 15-13 overall record.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The fifth-seeded Wayne State University volleyball program (15-13 overall) and fourth-seeded Saginaw Valley State (19-9 overall) squared off on Wednesday night in one of four GLIAC Quarterfinal across the league as the 2018 GLIAC Tournament got underway.  The Warriors were swept by scores of 25-19, 25-13, and 26-24.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors began the first set by winning the first four points and led 8-6 following a kill from Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron).  The Cardinals seized the momentum and led 13-10.  A kill from Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) kept WSU close at 14-13.  SVSU extended the home advantage to 17-13 and forced head coach Tim Koth to take a timeout and slow the rally.  Saginaw Valley State continued to control the tempo and won 25-19.

It was more of the same to open the second set as SVSU led 12-2 early in the game.  WSU used its second timeout after the Cardinals went up 15-5.  The Warriors pulled within 21-12 after a point from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) but it would be too late as SVSU took a 2-0 match lead by winning 25-13.

WSU was unable to find its footing early in the third set as SVSU won the first three points before Christa Raicevich (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich. / Grosse Pointe North) came off the bench to put the Warriors on the board with a kill.  Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.) and Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) kept the visitors close at 7-5 with kills of their own.  Raicevich connected for a kill and then a solo block by the senior tied the set at 9-9 before a service ace by Duffield gave WSU a 10-9 lead.  Another kill from Raicevich pushed the lead to 13-9 as the Cardinals used a timeout.  The visitors lead grew to 17-14 following an SVSU attacking error.  The Cards tied the set at 17-17 and took an 18-17 lead, forcing the Warriors to use a timeout in hopes of slowing SVSU's momentum. WSU answered with a kill from Fike and two aces from VanderWal, giving the Warriors a 20-18 lead and a home error made it 21-18.  Wayne State led 23-20 but the Cardinals stormed back to tie the set at 24-24 and won the final two points to take the set 26-24 and complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson led WSU with 11 kills and 16 digs, while Duffield dished out 29 assists.
