Men's Basketball Falters Against Lakers

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (1-5 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) concluded its GLIAC opening weekend against Lake Superior State (3-3 overall, 1-1 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors fell 89-65.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State started the first half with the momentum and led 10-5 at the 16:01 mark following two free throws by Tristan Wilson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline) and a jumper from Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan).  The Lakers took control and a lay-up by Rog Stein plus a three-pointer from Ke'Montrece Collins pushed the visitors' advantage to 17-13 with 10:49 left in the first stanza.  Blake Marquardt connected from deep at the 8:53 mark to extend LSSU's lead to 24-13.  Two points from Xavier Cochran (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Huron) trimmed the deficit to nine, 27-18, with 6:17 left to play.  Antonio Marshall (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) kept the Warriors within striking distance, 29-21, with a triple at the 4:04 mark.  The Lakers took their largest lead of the afternoon, 34-21, after a bucket by Stein with 2:23 left before intermission.  Cochran collected an offensive rebound and a put back as the first stanza ended which brought Wayne State with seven, 36-29.

The visitors started the second half on an 8-0 run and led 44-29 at the 17:09 mark.  Lake Superior State would not relinquish its double-digit lead as the Lakers would lead by 13 at the 10:46 mark and 20 with 4:38 left to play.  Wayne State would lose 89-65.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) finished with his second straight double-double and third of his career with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Cochran tallied 13 points and Davis chipped in 10 points.

LEADING THE LAKERS
Malek Adams scored a game-high 24 points, while Jackson Schrameyer finished with 13 points.  Stein collected a game-high 13 rebounds.

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot a season-low 32 percent from the floor, while LSSU posted a 51 field goal percentage, including 13-of-27 from three-point range (48 percent).

UP NEXT
Wayne State travels to Davenport on Thursday night with tip-off scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
