Women's Basketball Posts 65-56 Road Victory

Miller leads the squad with 18 points and six assists.

WILBERFORCE, Ohio – The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (5-5 overall) concluded its pre-exam schedule with a 65-56 road victory at Central State University (3-7 overall) Tuesday evening.

The Warriors and Marauders exchanged baskets for most of the first five minutes with CSU's Jaeda Davis making a bucket with 4:57 remaining in the opening stanza to knot the score at 12-12.  Over the last 4:55, WSU outscored the hosts 8-0 to lead 20-12 after the first 10 minutes.  Freshman Grace George (De Witt, Mich.) and senior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) led Wayne State with five and four points, respectively.

WSU was held without a point for nearly the first seven minutes of the second quarter as Central State began the frame with a 12-0 run to grab a 24-20 advantage.  After junior Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained her second triple of the game to end the scoring drought, Williams basket put the Warriors in front 25-24.  However, CSU would score the final five points of the stanza to lead 29-25 at intermission.

After shooting 64 percent (9-of-14) from the floor in the first quarter, WSU was just 2-of-9 (22 percent) in the second period.  The Warriors also had 15 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.

Wayne State began the second half on a 10-2 run to take a 35-31 lead.  The Marauders responded with a 9-0 spurt to regain the advantage at 40-35.  The Warriors would end the third period on an 11-4 run, keyed by five points from junior Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep), to lead 46-44 heading into the final stanza.

WSU scored the first five points of the fourth period on a pair of free throws by Chambers and a three-pointer by freshman Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) to grab a seven-point advantage at 51-44.  After a CSU hoop, Chambers connected from beyond the arc to increase the margin to eight (54-46).

Following a 4-0 run by Central State, Miller made her fourth triple of the second half to increase the lead to seven (57-50) with 5:23 remaining.  After the Marauders pulled within four (58-54) with 4:21 left, the Wayne State defense limited CSU to just one made field goal the rest of the way.  Meanwhile, the Warriors scored seven of the game's final nine points to secure the victory.
