Women's Basketball Falls to #1-Ashland

Warriors upended 101-84.

DETROIT – The Wayne State University women's basketball team (14-5 overall, 9-4 GLIAC) saw its seven-game win streak come to an end Thursday night, as #1-Ashland (21-0 overall, 13-0 GLIAC) defeated the Warriors 101-84 at the Matthaei Center.

The Warriors led by as much as 13 – 31-18 with 4:42 remaining in the second quarter – giving Ashland the biggest deficit it had seen this season.  The Eagles earned their 58th consecutive win on Thursday, setting a new Division II record in both men's and women's basketball.  Wayne State scored more points than any other Ashland opponent during the 2017-18 regular-season campaign (the last team to score more than 78 points vs. AU was UConn in a 119-56 exhibition game victory against the Eagles).

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors fell behind 6-4 in the first 1:23 of the game, but rattled off a 7-0 run to take an 11-6 lead.  Ashland's Sarah Hart hit two free throws, but senior Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) and junior Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) hit layups on back-to-back possessions to push the advantage to 15-8 in favor of Wayne State.  Later in the quarter, Williams hit a three-pointer to give WSU a 20-10 lead.  The Eagles hit two field goals to pull within six (20-14), but sophomore Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained a triple with two seconds left in the first period, ending the quarter with a 23-14 lead for the Warriors.

WSU didn't slow in the second frame.  Near the midway point of the quarter, Hart hit a layup to make it 25-18.  Wayne State countered with a 6-0 run, fueled by buckets from Birchmeier, Williams and sophomore Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep).  AU countered with a 6-0 run of its own, cutting the Wayne State to eight (32-24) with 3:38 to play in the half.

Ashland found its own in the final 2:52 of the second stanza.  After India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) made a jumper to increase the Warrior lead to 36-26, the Eagles rattled off a 15-0 run.  That not only gave AU the lead, but pushed it to 41-36.  Senior Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) ended the Warrior drought by hitting a layup with 25 seconds left in the half, but Ashland's Renee Stimpert countered with a layup of her own. That field goal, with nine seconds on the game clock, sent AU into the half with a 43-38 advantage.

The Eagles weren't done out of the break. AU started the third quarter on an 11-0 run, exploding to a 58-42 to lead with 5:54 left in the period.  The Eagles outpaced the Warriors 38-21 in the third frame, taking an 81-59 lead into the final 10 minutes.  Wayne State outscored Ashland 25-20 in the final quarter, but the late effort was not enough to hold off the Eagles.
