Women's Basketball Wins Road Contest At SVSU, 60-52

Birchmeier, Chambers and Williams combine for 40 points.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball team (17-6 overall, 12-5 GLIAC) had a 19-11 scoring edge in the fourth quarter to snap a 41-41 deadlock after 30 minutes and post a 60-52 road victory at Saginaw Valley State University (5-19 overall, 5-12 GLIAC) Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After the host Cardinals connected on their first field goal attempt, a triple by Francesca Coury, the Warrior defense held SVSU without a field goal until a jumper by Hannah Settingsgaard with 3:11 remaining before halftime.  During the more than 16 minutes Wayne State did not allow a field goal, the Warriors went on a 19-9 run (SVSU was 7-of-12 from the charity stripe).  Junior guard Ja'Nae Williams (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) made two field goals in the opening stanza for a team-high four points as WSU led 8-4.

Following Settingsgaard's bucket, junior India Hawkins (Detroit, Mich. / Edison Public School Academy) connected from long distance to give Wayne State a 22-12 lead.  After four consecutive Cardinal points, senior Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) drained a triple and freshman Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) made two foul shots for an 11-point margin (27-16).  Back-to-back baskets by SVSU's Anna Hall and Coury cut the Warrior lead to seven (27-20) at intermission.

After being held to 20 minutes in the first half, Saginaw Valley State totaled 21 points in the third period by shooting 53 percent (8-of-15) from the floor, including 3-of-7 (43 percent) from beyond the arc.  Senior Payton Birchmeier (Corunna, Mich.) made all three of her field goal attempts in the stanza, including a triple for a team-best seven points.

The host Cardinals tallied the first four points of the fourth quarter before WSU knotted the game at 45-45 on consecutive hoops by Williams and senior Sara Ruhstorfer (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Flint Powers Catholic).  Coury hit another three-pointer before sophomore Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) scored on a layup to make it a one-point deficit for WSU at 48-47.  Williams made two free throws following a steal to regain the lead at 49-48.  After a bucket by Hall put SVSU in front 50-49, Birchmeier made two foul shots and Ruhstorfer connected from beyond the arc following a steal by Wilson.

Williams and Wilson each made buckets to extend the run to 9-0, which gave Wayne State a 58-50 advantage.  A field goal for the Cardinals made it a two possession game (58-52) with 3:09 remaining.  However, both teams went scoreless for the next 2:51 until Chambers split a pair from the charity stripe.  During the drought, SVSU 0-for-5 from the field, while the Warriors were 0-for-2 with two miscues.
