DETROIT -- In the final home game of the regular season, the Wayne State University men's basketball program (14-9 overall, 12-6 GLIAC) won for the sixth time in its last seven games, topping Northwood (10-16 overall, 6-12 GLIAC) 87-73 on Saturday afternoon. It was the most points WSU has scored since a 90-point performance against Kentucky Wesleyan in the opening weekend of the season. The Warriors led by as many as 20 points en route to their 10th home win of the season.
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium),
Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech),
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly),
Nick Mutebi (Farmington Hills, Mich. / U of D Jesuit) and
George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) were honored prior to the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Warriors scored the first four points of the contest as Mutebi and Key both found room under the basket after offensive rebounds for easy layups. Moore tied the game at 9-9 at the 15:53 mark with a trey. With 10:41 to play in the first half, Key connected for the second straight possession and pushed the home advantage to eight, 17-9. A turnaround jumper by David Jelinek brought the Timberwolves within one, 26-25, at the 5:57 mark but WSU would go on a 10-0 run to take a 36-25 lead with two minutes remaining. A fast break dunk at the end of the opening stanza from sophomore
Karim Murray (Detroit, Mich. / Western International) after a nifty pass by junior
Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) put the halftime score at 42-29.
- The momentum stayed with WSU into the second half and Key connected on a 15-foot jumper at the 17:42 mark to give the Warriors a 48-31 lead. A steal and another fast break bucket from Booth pushed the home lead to 52-34 with 16:35 to play and forced Northwood to use a timeout. NU used a three-pointer from Trey McBride to cut the deficit to 14 at the 14:09 mark. McBride kept NU within striking distance, 58-45, with a jumper with 12:16 to play. A jumper from Booth extended the Warriors' lead to 64-48 at the 9:43 mark. The lead remained comfortable at the six-minute mark after two free throws from Moore, but the T-Wolves would rally to trim the WSU lead to 10 with just under 2:30 remaining in the contest. Wayne State would regain control and knock down its shots from the charity stripe down the stretch to win 87-73.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Booth finished 11-for-15 from the floor, scoring 25 points, while Moore posted his second straight 20-point game, scoring 24. Moore went 9-of-10 from the free throw line and also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while dishing out six assists.
LEADING THE TIMBERWOLVES
- Zach Allread led NU with 17 points, while McBride scored 16 points.
TEAM STATS
- WSU shot 53.1 percent (34-of-64) and made 16 of its 20 free throws (80 percent). The Warriors out-rebounded the Timberwolves 35-31 and scored 21 points off 14 NU turnovers.
PLAYOFF PICTURE
- The win secures a GLIAC South Division title for the Warriors, but there is still work to be done to clinch a home playoff game on Feb. 28th. Two wins this coming week would give WSU the third seed in the upcoming GLIAC Tournament and a home game, while a split would still allow WSU to host.
UP NEXT
- The Green & Gold will conclude the regular season with a trip to the Upper Peninsula, beginning with a contest at Michigan Tech on Thursday night.
