Softball Falls In Back-To-Back One-Run Affairs

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The 15th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (0-4 overall) suffered a pair of one-run setbacks on Saturday during the second day of the 2018 Dome Invitational hosted by Lewis University.  The Warriors were blanked 1-0 by Illinois Springfield, before being edged 2-1 by Lewis.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU's Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) and Prairie Stars hurler Ali Haesele (3-1) were locked in a pitcher's duel as the duo allowed just seven hits in the contest.

Wayne State's lone hit was a two-out single in the fourth by Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.).  Turkalj also walked leading off the second inning, but was stranded at second.

Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) walked leading off the sixth but was stranded at second following a sacrifice bunt by Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont).

Guitar (0-2) retired the first seven UIS batters before a one-out double in the fourth.  She retired two of the next three batters to keep the game scoreless.

In the fourth, Illinois Springfield scored the game's lone run on a one-out single by Morgan Edwards.  Erin Stroup singled and went to second as the throw to third retired the pinch-runner.  After originally being ruled out of the batter's box on the previous pitch, Bree Derhake singled up the middle scoring Stroup.

Guitar struck out four and walked one, while allowing the one earned run on six hits.

Haesele faced just 25 batters recording five strikeouts to two walks.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Warriors out-hit the host Flyers 9-6, but Lewis scored an unearned run with two outs in the top of the seventh on back-to-back WSU miscues for the win.

Alise Perna had a one-out double in the third, and Sarah Demasi had a two-out triple down the right field line to give the Flyers an early 1-0 advantage.

Wayne State tied the contest in fifth as Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a leadoff single and advanced to second on a wild pitch.  After a sacrifice bunt by Kressler, Rainey Psenicka worked a walk to put runners on the corners.  Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) singled in the hole at short to load the bases.  Turkalj had an RBI single to left to knot the game at 1-1, but a force out at home and a strikeout ended the threat.

Kressler (0-1) went the distance in the circle for the Warriors.  She allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with one strikeout and one walk.

Cassie Shaw (1-2) surrendered nine hits, but just the one run with six strikeouts to one walk.

Lucas and Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) each had two hits for WSU.
