Softball Ends Dome Invitational With 1-0 Triumph

Guitar tosses four-hit shutout.

ROSEMONT, Ill. – The 15th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (1-4 overall) earned its first win of the 2018 campaign with a 1-0 triumph over Missouri S&T (7-7 overall) Sunday at the Dome at the Ballpark.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors had one hit in each of the first three innings but were unable to get a runner to third.  After going out in order in the fourth, WSU had back-to-back singles starting the top of the fifth by Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) and Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).  After a successful sacrifice bunt by Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.), the next two hitters were retired.

In the top of the sixth, Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) laced a single to left leading off the frame.  After a sacrifice bunt by Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.), Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) ripped a double through the second baseman's legs scoring Lucas with the game's only run.

Barrett and Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) sandwiched singles around a sacrifice bunt in the seventh, and a two-out walk to Lucas loaded the bases, but Wayne State was unable to extend its lead.

Kressler also had a key play defensively in the bottom of the fifth.  Following a leadoff walk and a pop out, she tracked down a short blooper over second base and doubled the runner at first.

IN THE CIRCLE

Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) went the distance in the circle to earn her first victory of the season.  She scattered four singles and recorded two strikeouts to two walks.

Avery English hurled the entire game for the Miners.  She allowed the one earned run on nine hits with two strikeouts to one walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.), Barrett and McClounie each had two hits, while Lucas reached base three times on a single, a walk and a hit by pitch.

UP NEXT

Wayne State will be idle until its spring break trip which begins with a pair of contests on March 10th.
