Softball Wins Twice On First Day Of Spring Break Trip

Warriors claim 10-1 and 6-4 victories.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball squad (3-4 overall) began its spring break trip with a pair of victories on Saturday.  The Warriors upended St. Thomas Aquinas (1-2 overall) 10-1 in five innings in the opener, before edging Fairmont State (2-5 overall) 6-4 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE RECAP

WSU exploded for six runs on four hits in the top of the first against the Spartans.  Freshman infielder Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) was hit with a one-out pitch, and moved to second as senior outfielder Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) worked a five-pitch walk.  Sophomore catcher Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) then singled up the middle to load the bases on a 3-1 offering.  Freshman hurler Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had a two-run single on a 1-2 pitch to break the scoreless tie.  Junior shortstop Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) then re-loaded the bases with an 0-2 single.  Junior outfielder Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) then smacked her second career grand slam on a 3-2 pitch to make it 6-0.

Both of Guitar's grand slams have come in the first inning and both in Florida (first was March 17, 2016, against Southern Connecticut State).

Wayne State added a single run in the third as Kressler had a leadoff single and scored on a two-out base hit by senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington).

The Warriors scored their final three runs in the top of the fourth.  Freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) had a leadoff single and Psenicka reached on an error.  Turkalj had an RBI fielder's choice, while Kressler's sacrifice fly plated Psenicka.  Turkalj later scored on the Spartans second miscue of the frame.

St. Thomas Aquinas scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth on a hit by pitch followed by a triple.

IN THE CIRCLE

Kressler (1-1) allowed one earned run on two hits in her four innings of work.  She did not record a walk or a strikeout.  Freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning.

Colleen Borum (0-2) pitched the first four innings for the Spartans.  She surrendered 10 runs (eight earned) on eight hits with one walk and one strikeout.  Paige Toothaker allowed a hit and a walk in a scoreless inning of work.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

In addition to Guitar's grand slam, Kressler went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBI as part of WSU's nine-hit attack.

LEADING THE SPARTANS

Ashley Landolina had both STA hits, a double and an RBI triple.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State struck in the bottom of the first as Myers reached on a leadoff hit by pitch.  Following a sacrifice bunt by Psenicka, in which Myers went all the way to third, Lucas laced a 3-1 offering through the left side plating Myers.

After leaving the first two base runners in the second stranded, the Warriors tallied two runs in the third.  Turkalj had a one-out single, and Kressler scored on a two-out double by McClounie.  Guitar then singled home McClounie to make it 3-0.

The Fighting Falcons had four consecutive two-out hits to knot the game at 3-3 in the top of the fourth.

WSU answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning.  Junior catcher Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) had a leadoff single and pinch-runner Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.) went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Myers.  Following a passed ball which put two runners in scoring position, Lucas doubled in Clayton with the go-ahead run.  Turkalj greeted the FSU reliever with an RBI single to make it 5-3.  Kressler's single scored Lucas for a 6-3 lead.

A one-out solo home run by Fairmont State in the top of the seventh completed the scoring.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (2-2) allowed four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and two walks.

Rachel Bias (1-3) surrendered six runs (five earned) on eight hits in 3.1 innings.  Darby Petersen pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing five hits but no runs.  Neither FSU hurler recorded a strikeout or a walk.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Lucas went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Turkalj was 4-for-4.  Guitar also contributed two hits as WSU tallied 13 hits in the contest.  Turkalj matched her career high with four hits, set almost a year to the day (March 11, 2017 vs. LIU Post).

LEADING THE FIGHTING FALCONS

Jenny Stubbs had two hits including a home run.
