DETROIT -- The third time was not the charm as the third-seeded Wayne State University men's basketball program (15-11 overall) fell to sixth-seeded Michigan Tech (15-13 overall) on Wednesday night in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament 88-74. The Huskies won both matchups during the regular season and controlled much the third meeting en route to advancing to GLIAC semifinals.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- MTU led 7-2 to begin the first half after an Issac Appleby layup.Â
Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) tied the game at 7-7 with a bucket at the 15:05 mark.Â
Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) gave WSU a 10-9 lead, it's only lead of the night, with 14:12 to play in the stanza. The Huskies' advantage grew to 21-15 at the 9:13 mark and Kyle Monroe followed with one his many jump shots to give MTU a 26-17 lead with 7:14 remaining. A Booth jumper at the 6:18 mark pulled the Warriors within five and Booth connected from deep on the next possession to trim deficit to four with 5:32 to play. Monroe score six straight points to give the visitors a 39-30 lead with 2:17 to play. At halftime, Michigan Tech led 43-36.

Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) started to find his rhythm and drove to the rim to cut MTU's lead to 50-42 at the 17:34 mark of the second half. A triple by Monroe pushed the deficit to 56-42 with 15:22 remaining in the contest. With 11:50 left to play, Booth's layup brought the Green & Gold within eight, 58-46. MTU controlled the remainder of the contest and won 88-74.
LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Booth led the Warriors with 21 points, while Key tallied 20 points. Moore chipped in 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
LEADING THE HUSKIES
- Monroe posted 45 points on 18-of-24 shooting, while Appleby scored 13 and Dawson Bilski contributed 11 points.
