Softball Begins 2018 Campaign With A Pair Of Setbacks

Softball Loses Twice On Opening Day Of 2018

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The 15th-ranked Wayne State University softball team (0-2 overall) began its 2018 season with a pair of losses on the opening day of the Lewis Indoor Tournament held at the Dome at the Ballpark.

GAME ONE RECAP

Winona State (4-2 overall) scored once in the second, third and fourth innings, then added four runs in the top of the fifth.

The 19th-ranked Winona State Warriors out-hit the Wayne State Warriors 12-to-6 with Winona catcher Rylee Stout smacking a three-run home run with two outs in the top of the fifth to seal the contest.

Winona had five extra-base hits (two double, two triples and the aforementioned home run).

Six different Wayne State batters had hits with freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) contributing a double.

Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) went the distance in the circle for Wayne State.  She allowed seven earned runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Jordyn Kleman (2-0) scatted six hits for Winona State.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Wisconsin-Parkside Rangers (5-5 overall) scored three times in the top of the first before WSU recorded an out, on two hits, two walks, two Warrior miscues and three stolen bases.

Meanwhile, Wayne State had a single in the first by sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.), and two hits in the third but could not get on the scoreboard.

After getting two more base runners in the fifth - on a walk to junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) and a pinch-hit single by freshman Rose Myers (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester) - the score remained 3-0 heading to the bottom of the sixth.

Freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) laced a 3-2 offering through the right side, and Turkalj reached on a base hit.  Following a four pitch walk to Kressler, junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) hit a pop fly into shallow right field, which the UWP second baseman mishandled allowing WSU's first run of the season to score.  Pinch-runner Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) scored on a single down the left field line by sophomore pinch-hitter Rachelle Clayton (Guleph, Ont.) but the potential tying run was thrown out at the plate.  A fly out off the roof and a "normal" fly out ended the frame.

The Rangers extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh on a one-out single by Jessica Shields, who stole second, and scored on a single by Megan Aliverti.

WSU went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

Presly Buchanan started in the circle for WSU and faced five batters allowing two hits, two walks and a leadoff batter reaching on an error.  Kressler recorded the final 21 outs allowing just one run on four hits.

Alyssa Hrncar (3-2) went the distance for UWP.  She allowed two runs (both earned) on seven hits with two walks and no strikeouts.

Turkalj was the lone Warrior with a multiple-hit affair.
