Men's Basketball Takes Overtime Thriller, 71-68 At Tiffin, For Third Straight Win

The Warriors are now 9-5 in league games.

TIFFIN, Ohio -- The Wayne State University men's basketball program (11-8 overall, 9-5 GLIAC) edged Tiffin University (7-15 overall, 3-11 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon and needed overtime to secure its third straight win, 71-68.  It was the first overtime contest of the season for Wayne State.  The Warriors scored the first seven points of OT and held off a late rally by the Dragons to secure the victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- A three-pointer from George Spencer (Detroit, Mich. / Belleville) gave WSU an early 5-2 lead at the 18:17 mark.  Tiffin scored nine straight points to take an 11-5 advantage before Chuck Key (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Tech) knocked down a jumper to end the rally.  The deficit reach double-digits, 17-7, after a bucket from Quentin Jones with 12:33 left in the first half.  An emphatic baseline dunk from Spencer energized the Warriors and kept WSU close, 18-14.  Another jumper from Key at the six-minute mark pulled the Warriors within two, 18-16.  Marcus Moore (Lansing, Mich. / Waverly) tied the game at 21-21 with a layup at the 2:51 mark and Ronald Booth (Detroit, Mich. / Consortium) gave the Green & Gold a 23-21, two possessions later.  The teams entered the locker rooms all square at 23-23.  WSU's defense held TU to just one field goal and six points over the final 12:25 of the first stanza.

- The Dragons opened the second half on a 10-2 run and led 33-25 at the 17:24 mark.  Two free throws from Moore and a triple by Booth cut the home advantage to 39-32 with 13:06 left in regulation.  A conventional three-point play from Moore at the 10:24 mark made the deficit seven at 42-35.  Justin Miller kept the momentum with Tiffin and his jumper with 7:55 to play pushed the home lead to 11, 48-37.  The Warriors answered with a 10-0 run to trim TU's lead to one, 48-47, with 5:48 remaining.  An old-fashioned three-point play from Spencer highlighted the rally.  A 5-0 run by Tiffin gave the Dragons a 53-47 lead at the 3:20 mark.  WSU pulled within one with 1:23 left to play after a fast-break triple from Booth and a layup from Moore.  Another Dragons' bucket made it 55-52 before Latin Davis, Jr. (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Milan) split a pair of free throws (as the TU tuba player played during the missed free throw) with 32.2 seconds remaining to trim the home lead to two, 55-53.  A layup by Key with 9.8 seconds left tied the game at 55-55.  Key sent the game to overtime with a block on Alex Brown's potential game-winning layup on the final play of regulation.

-  WSU scored the first seven points of the extra period and led 62-55 after a conventional three-point play from Darian Owens-White (Detroit, Mich. / River Rouge) at the 2:04 mark.  A nifty reverse layup from Davis, Jr. made it 64-58 with 1:13 remaining.  A trey from Terrell Mabins at the 37.4 mark brought TU within three, 66-63.  After two Spencer free throws (with 27.4 left) gave WSU a five-point lead, Mabins converted a layup and foul shot to make it 68-66 with 21.4 seconds remaining.  Booth made one of two free throws (with 19.9 seconds left) and Miller's game-tying three-point attempt found only iron with under five seconds left to play.  Key was fouled with 4.7 seconds remaining and made both foul shots.  A late Tiffin basket was not enough as WSU won its third straight game, 71-68.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Moore paced WSU with 20 points, while also pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out six assists.  Booth finished with 16 points and Spencer tallied 14.  Key notched his fifth career double-double (second of the season) with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

LEADING THE DRAGONS
- Austin Adams collected game-high totals of 21 points and 12 rebounds.
