GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (15-6 overall, 10-5 GLIAC) dropped into a tie-for-fourth in the GLIAC standings after a 71-41 setback vs. Grand Valley State University (19-4 overall, 12-3 GLIAC) Thursday evening at the DeltaPlex.  It was just WSU's second loss in the last 10 outings.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Warriors had early advantages of 2-0 and 4-2, before the Lakers ended the opening stanza on an 11-0 run to lead 13-4 after 10 minutes.

Wayne State's scoring drought lasted nearly 10 minutes until sophomore guard Alex Matus (Millbury, Ohio / Toledo Central Catholic) drained a triple to pull WSU within 16-7.  Senior Shannon Wilson (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Bloomfield Hills) scored the next four Warrior points, before assisting on sophomore Nastassja Chambers (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Arbor Prep) conventional three-point play, which cut the Wayne State deficit to eight (22-14) just past the mid-point of the second quarter.  GVSU outscored the Warriors 13-7 until intermission to lead 35-21 at halftime.

The Lakers scored nine of the first 16 points of the third period to open a 16-point margin (44-28) until Wilson's triple made it a 13-point game.  GVSU ended the frame on an 11-2 run for a 55-33 lead after three quarters.
