Softball Wins Twice on Sunday; Extends Winning Streak To Five Games

Warriors won game one with pitching and game two with offense.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wayne State University softball team (5-4 overall) extended its winning streak to five games with a pair of victories on Sunday.  The Warriors blanked Caldwell (1-4 overall) 3-0 in the opener, then notched a 13-3 five-inning triumph over Jefferson (2-3 overall).  In losing its first four games, WSU was outscored 14-3, while winning the last five contests, the Warriors have outscored their opponents 33-8.

GAME ONE RECAP

After managing just two hits and no runs in the first five innings, WSU exploded for three runs on four hits in the top of the sixth against the Cougars.

In the top of the sixth, freshman infielder Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.) had a leadoff single and senior outfielder Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) followed with a bunt single.  Sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) then walked on a 3-2 offering to load the bases.  Following a force out at home and a strikeout, junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had an infield single scoring Lucas with the game's first run.  Pinch-hitter Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) then delivered a two-run single to right.

Guitar retired the final six Caldwell batters to complete the shutout victory.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (3-2) faced just 24 batters in tossing the three-hit shutout.  She struck out two and did not walk a batter.

Cougar pitcher Sara Bearden (1-1) allowed three earned runs on seven hits.  Bearden struck out seven and walked three.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Lucas went 2-for-4, while junior shortstop Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had the lone extra-base hit in the game, a triple.

LEADING THE COUGARS

Three different Caldwell batters had singles.

GAME TWO RECAP

Wayne State had its highest scoring output of the young season by scoring 13 times against the Rams.  It also marked the fifth consecutive game the Warriors scored first (5-0 when scoring first, compared to 0-4 when the opponent scores first).

Jefferson loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first, but a force out at home and a 1-2-3 double play ended the threat.

WSU responded with four runs in the bottom of the first.  Psenicka walked and freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had an infield single.  After a sacrifice bunt by Lucas, Turkalj had an RBI single.  On a 1-0 pitch, McClounie smacked her first home run of the season, a three-run clout.

The Rams scored an unearned run in the second on two hits and a passed ball.

Wayne State regained the four-run cushion in the second as Psenicka singled and went to second on a ground out.  Lucas had an RBI single on a 3-2 offering to make it 5-1.

The Warriors continued the offense in the third with three runs.  Guitar singled and senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) followed with a double.  Sophomore third baseman Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) had a two-run single.  Kressler's sacrifice fly plated Adams.

Jefferson scored another unearned run in the fourth, before WSU tacked on five more runs.  McClounie had a leadoff home run and Messina followed with a single.  With two outs, Adams was hit by a 3-0 pitch and junior Jamie MacNeil (Brampton, Ont.) had an infield single to load the bases.  Kressler laced a two-run double to center.  Pinch-hitter Kelsey Ramus (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota) followed with a two-run single.

The Rams scored once in the top of the fifth off reliever Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.).
