Warriors rally from 6-0 deficit to win game one; fall 2-1 in the nightcap.

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Wayne State University softball team (6-5 overall) continued spring break play on Monday with two very different games.  In the opener, the Warriors rallied from a 6-0 deficit to defeat in-region foe William Jewell (12-5 overall) 17-7 in six innings.  In the nightcap, WSU let a 1-0 advantage slip away into a 2-1 setback to Southern New Hampshire (12-0 overall).

GAME ONE RECAP

The Cardinals scored six times in the bottom of the first on four hits, two Wayne State miscues and a walk, capped off by a grand slam home run from Phoebe Dabbour.

The Warriors cut into the deficit with a pair of runs in the top of the second.  Junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) singled and senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) doubled.  Junior Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.) followed with an RBI ground out and sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) plated Barrett with a single.

WSU drew even with a four-run third inning.  A WJC error and a walk were sandwiched around two outs.  Senior Hailey Lazarek (Allen Park, Mich.) and Adams had back-to-back singles to score one and leave the bases loaded.  Senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) tied the game with a bases clearing double to center.

Wayne State scored an unearned run in the fourth on an RBI single by Guitar, then added another run in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.).  William Jewell pulled within one (8-7) with a solo home run in the fifth.

In the top of the sixth, the Warriors exploded for nine runs on 11 hits as 14 players came to bat.  Adams had an RBI single, Psenicka had a two-run single, sophomore Brooke Turkalj (St. Jacobs, Ont.) had an RBI single, freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.) had an RBI single, and junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) contributed a two-run single to make 15-7.  Guitar followed with an RBI double and Barrett had an RBI single.
