Softball Splits On Tuesday

CLERMONT, Fla. – For the second day in a row on Tuesday, the Wayne State University softball team (7-6 overall) won the opener but lost game two of the day.  The Warriors defeated Millersville (7-3) by a 4-1 score in game one as freshman Presly Buchanan (Cambridge, Ont.) earned her first collegiate victory.  WSU fell 7-2 in the nightcap to Illinois Springfield (12-6 overall).

GAME ONE RECAP

Wayne State scored once in the first and added two more runs in the second for an early 3-0 advantage.  In the bottom of the first, senior Kristen Lucas (Newmarket, Ont.) had a leadoff single and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Rainey Psenicka (Guelph, Ont.).  Lucas advanced to third on a passed ball and scored on a double by freshman Bryanna Kressler (Kitchener, Ont.).

In the second, junior Megan Guitar (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) had a leadoff double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by classmate Ashley Messina (Troy, Mich.).  After senior Kylee Barrett (Croswell, Mich. / Croswell-Lexington) reached on an error, sophomore Emma Adams (Rockwood, Ont.) doubled in Guitar, with Barrett scoring on a sacrifice fly by Lucas.

The Warriors scored their final run in the fourth as Messina walked, and after a wild pitch, Adams doubled in pinch-runner Rachelle Clayton (Guelph, Ont.).

Buchanan retired the first 12 Marauder batters until the leadoff batter in the fifth reached on an error, but she responded by retired the next three MU hitters.

Millersville scored once in the sixth on two hits and a WSU miscue.

IN THE CIRCLE

Buchanan (1-1) allowed one unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts to one walk.

Catherine Johnson (1-2) surrendered four runs (three earned) on six hits with one walk and no strikeouts in her six innings of work.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Kressler and Adams each had two hits.

Four different batters had singles.

GAME TWO RECAP

The Prairie Stars scored at least once in each of the first four innings to lead 7-0 before Wayne State scored the final two runs.

UIS totaled 11 hits in the first four innings and were aided by three Warrior errors.

WSU scored once in the fifth as Barrett reached on a one-out error, moved to second on a single by Messina and scored on a single by Adams.

In the top of the seventh, junior Hannah McClounie (Essex, Ont.) had a leadoff double, and scored on a single by Adams.

IN THE CIRCLE

Guitar (4-3) allowed seven runs (three earned) on 14 hits in six innings.  She struck out three and walked four.

Ali Haesele (8-2) held the Warriors scoreless on two hits in her four innings in the circle.  She struck out six and did not walk a batter.  Jaycee Craver pitched the final three innings allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts.

LEADING THE WARRIORS

Adams had two hits and both RBI.

Haesele went 4-for-4, while Erin Stoup went 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

UP NEXT

After an off day on Wednesday, the Warriors will battle PSAC members Slippery Rock and California (Pa.) at 8:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., respectively on Thursday.
